Default servo to choose for 22lb extra?

I have great respect for the Hitec Digitals I've been using with carbonite gears or titanium. I'm now working on a ohio RC 87" extra and have 6975's on everything and a 333oz titanium on rudder. What I heard from a flying buddy was that people had stripped out the carbonites on gas a/c and not to use them. I would point out that this plane is more scale and less 3D so the surfaces are smaller with less throw available. If anyone has had a servo fail I need to know, it's cheeper to replace the servo now than later!!! Thanks in advance.

I stay away from Hitec Metal geared as I have had to replace the gears in my 5945's when they got to sloppy after 3 years of hard flying. Gear lash is magnified by 3D throws.

Hey dude,
Get the new Hitec 5955's. They have really came a long way with them now. I have just bought 9 of them ($$$) after seeing how they work in a flying bud's 40% plane.

So for your smaller plane they would give you the trust and feel of security that I think you are looking for. I understand completely and am right there with you. For me I go ahead and get (the best) or what I think is the best for me after researching and seeing first hand. Might as well spend the hobby $$$ now instead of later and later usually meaning you are having to get a new plane too!

I also have a 3W 40% with 5911 JR's which I am going on my second season with them and they are excellent too!
Hope this helps.

The 5955 is a really killer servo, I agree. That's what is on rudder now. That's what I'm considering for everything else too.

I would go with either 2721's or 8411's(if you can find 8411's), for JR servos.

9206, 9402 or 9151 digi., if you like Futaba.

I will not comment on Hitec, as I have had nothing but TERRIBLE luck with them!

With Hitec, always avoid their cheep servo's (cored) , so that's anything in the 600 series like 5625 5645 645 you get the picture, I've seen lots quit while still programing a new machine before flight. However the 900's have been perfect for myself and anybody else I've flown with. What servo's gave you trouble?

Also avoid (Hitec's) resin gears as they are incredibly weak and metal gears as they get lash leading to flutter. That still leaves a lot of very good servo's but they're not cheap.

Hey mccrind,

It's great to have you here!!!

Personally I've never had a problem with any of the Hitec servos, having to change gears after 3 years of hard flying is a pretty good run on any servo. I've used most of the Hitec line from the 55's on up to the 5955 TG, and short of stripping gears in a crash or stripping a gear set in aileron flutter, never lost a servo.

Let it be known that I've run most brands at one time or another, they have all worked for me, some are better than others, IMO, but I still have at least 1 of every brand in a plane.

I'm going to move this thread to another forum to give you more exposure.

Welcome to the Giants!!!

Thanks Ken. I'm new to forums but the info is too good to not to try and figure it out. I guess I've spent too much of my life in this hobby instead of computers!

i think three years is a good statement for hitec,i have seen and heard of the great 8611's being sloppy right out of the box so i will put my two cents in here,i have used nothing but hitec for six years now and have had one failure in the hole lot

What do you guys think of the HiTec 5985 (3 gears metal, one metal carbonite)?
They have 9 oz. less torque than the previous 5945`s but they(hitec) sya that these new servos are better.
Any opinions?
