I just completed my winter project.
Goldberg Extra 330 with Fuji BT43EI-2. Goldbergs instructions say All standard servos. Well, I upgraded to Futaba S3010 High torque ( 72oz @4.8v & 90oz @ 6v ). I am running 6 volts. My concern now is should I be using metal gear servos? Are the S3010's that I already have mounted OK ? If they put out almost 100oz of torque , the plastic gears must be tough , Right ? I was thinking of Hitec HS-645MG's. This is my 1st gasser and money is tight. To purchase four Hitec's servos for the tail will be $140.00, I just spent $100.00 for the four S3010's. I would hate to lose the plane to stripped gears, but if you guys feel that the S3010 are tough enough for the size plane I am going to fly, GREAT, I didn't waste my money. I also bought Durbo super strength servo arms ( Futaba J ) will Futaba J servo arms fit Hitec servos ? All advice welcome, Thanks Last edited by 2robinhood; 04-13-2007 at 07:17 PM. |

If you buy Hitec HS645 servos you'll find they come with arms that are *much* stronger than the Dubro ones anyway.
Metal gears all the way for gassers! |

3010s have been Futabas most disappointing servo for me. Don't use them, IMHO. The gears on not strong enough for your application. A Funtana 90 with a Saito 150 is too much for 3010's (personal testimony)- you'll have problems if you use them - tough to land with flapping ailerons.

i agree, the 3010 is a good servo for 40 size 3D planes.. never use the futaba arms on a hitec servo they will fit on but the splines dont match up and will strip out at the worst time..

Go metal gear. Save the 3010 for something else or sell them. I run metal gear on my birds. I know I bought a 25% pattywagstaff off someone that has 3010s on the elevators and I have left them there since They do have a high torque rating at 6v. That is more then The elevators will ever need on the plane IMO. But If money is tight sell the servos and buy your self something that will take alittle more. I have to say on the flip side. My father has a goldberg yak and he is running the standard karbonite servos in the wing with hi torque metal gear servos in the tail. So far his plane is doing fine. But he only does loops, rolls and a flat spin here and there.
