I have heard that the YS170 moves it along at 150 on straight and level.
The Moki 2.10 and similar around 135 The Saito 180 around 125-130 A DA 170 around 225 ![]() I just got my radar gun and will do an actual test on all our race planes, incl the SD with a Moki 2.10. |

imho can’t figure the DZ 170 would spin a prop near as high rpms as the Moki and the Saito
has about ‘O’ chance of pulling the SD anywhere near 130mph, will look forward to your results though. |

Flew my H9 Sundowner F1 with the Evolution 26gx and matching tuned pipe. It flies great, the engine runs great, it just doesn't go real fast. I am getting around 9,000rpm with APC 16x8.
Will this engine improve after break-in? I chose the 26 because of the weight. I found some really good instructions on how to improve performance. Has anyone tried this setup? http://tech.flygsw.org/evolution26review.htm Thanks, George G. Royal |

It's completley legal...Smoky Yunick has nothing on our guys...By the rules, the YS can use any prop, any fuel...16 pitch and lots of nitro...
Talk about unintended consequences...

i used a garmin 60csx in mine.
146 mph before the stock saito 220 was fully run in. 30% nitro 16x14 and 7500 still rich. on the 7th gallon on fuel the power really came on strong, but a valve retainer let go before i got a chance to mount the gps again. |

Videocruzier,
Wow... awesome video. I know the video showed your equipment but I had a hard time deciphering it. Can you run that by me again? Cheers, Lyle |

thanks
i used 2 micro 151 ccd cameras. 1 micro video switcher from hydro cam a 1w 2.4 video tx and a buddy was aiming the ground antenna at the plane. 14db gain patch antenna has a narrow beam pattern only 30 degrees. as soon as i get some fuel threw the new 220 that they sent me.... the saito 220 does not like to idle under 2500 with a 16" prop, not enough mass. this video has my gps and on screen over lay on my something extra but will be in my sundowner and i have a new mount to bring the vibration down, i hope this video has my new camera in use. its the new 201. if you could see the raw video is so clear its hard to believe its from a micro cam check the shadow reflection in the pilots visor in the sundowner vid this video i used a new 10mw 2.4 video tx incase u r wondering i get my video break up when there are 2.4 rc systems that are on and close to my ground recording station and the rc 2.4 have shown no problems until they get closer then 10' to the video tx. if you are hitting 9000 on the ground (static) my bet is you are well over 9500 at speed, well past the hp and torque curve. i have always used the 70% rule as a base line. 60-70% of max rpm(peek HP) is close to your max torque of the engine. this is only a starting point to find the best prop for a given flying style. I would suggest you read the manual and find the engines reported optimum HP output at what RPM they suggest and then find the best prop that can turn that RPM with the best Diameter/Pitch set up. Higher RPM's dont mean a faster plane. And like Mike said, keep in mind your you are turning high "G's" and the exit of turns is key in pylon racing. The straights are very long with the SD's in USRA. So it may be benefitial to get a good prop to capture 1600' long straights and suffer a bit in the corners. Dont waste to much time turning, but dont give up speed in those long straights.
Tach it on ground and verify what yields you the best manufacturers RPM recomendations. Then simulate a race at 6 laps and see what gives you the best over all times. Get a radar gun or a telemetry system and use the data from that to see what prop produces the best times. Then report it so the rest of us dont have to spend the time and money ![]() Racing requires time and money and it yields fruit worth both. If this isnt an option, buy a bunch of props come to Ohio in June and see what everybody else is using and go from there. ![]() Though i believe the front runners are using Moki's. Yes the YS170 is good, but didnt win in the desert last year. This year will be interesting to see what has been discovered. |
