My understanding (from the instruction Rh1no gave me) is yes it will. Once the switch observes an invalid receiver signal for more than 0.75 sec it will switch off and remain off until the Rx power is cycled.

But if you are at 40ft doing rolling harrier loops 0.75 sec of lockout will 9 time out of 10 have you in the dirt anyway.

I would prefer it if the switch only cut the ignition if the rx completely shut down.

What exactly is an invalid rx signal???
My EDR kill switches from Howie are programmed to stay on in the event of failsafe. They only switch off if rx power is completely gone or they are told to from the tx.

Sorry folks, missed your last few posts. I will try to answer your questions and explain my reasoning with a few examples:

Firstly, the ignition switch should be used with PCM receivers so it can utilise the receivers PCM failsafe feature as well as its own ignition kill feature. I recommend that the receiver failsafe be set to hold for the ignition switch and to idle setting for throttle and I'm sure most people already use these settings.

So in the case of your basic PCM lockout where the receiver goes into fail safe, the receiver will still be sending a valid signal to the ignition switch to hold it's current position. So your ignition switch will remain on.

For the ignition switch to trigger its internal ignition kill feature, it must receive an invalid signal from the receiver for greater then about 0.75 seconds. Causes of this include:
  • Receiver internal failure.
  • Low receiver battery voltage (receiver reset).
  • Broken wire between receiver and ignition switch.
  • Severe radio interference that corrupts the signal between receiver and ignition switch (much worse then a normal PCM lockout hit).
The reason for the 0.75 second delay is that we don't want the switch to kill the ignition if there is a random error of very short duration. It should only kill the ignition if we have a sustained and serious problem.

The ignition stays off once the ignition kill is triggered to prevent a situation where the ignition switch tries to turn the ignition on and off in rapid succession (such as if the signal wire to the switch was making poor connection or if interference was right on the limit of triggering the kill function). This will prevent ignition failure or backfires etc which could damage the motor or throw a prop etc.

I hope this explains things for you.

Thanks for clearing that up Rhino. Sounds like a winner in that case.

Rh1no -

Will I need one of these for my 25% Extra?

Going to visit Ian at DA this arvo to see what I might need in the way of extra (no pun intended) switches and props for the SPE40. Unlucky for me his office is 2min from my place$$$$$

Still havent decided on servos yet. Any ideas?

Hi Sean,

I'm waiting on some servo leads before I can build a decent quantity but I have been quietly making the odd switch for folks who have contacted me via PM and e-mail . I will post more details when I have all the parts to begin formal production.

Cheers
Jeremy

Got talking to Smart-Fly to add an optical kill to my Extra but said it wouldnt work with my setup. So the only kill I have now is the trim and the kill switch on the plane.

Jeremy - will your kill switch be any different?

I'm running a AR7000 RX with no spare ch. Howie said I ddint need for such a small plane and since i dont IMAC... (yet)

Hi Roy,

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to use the Smart-Fly switch on your plane. As Glen said, please describe your radio setup so we can understand where the problem is.

Cheers
Jeremy

If it uses a electronic ignition (ie powered by a battery pack, not a magneto) there is no reason you can't use an optical or a Rhino kill.

The only thing you really need is a spare channel on the Rx.

Hey Glen

Check out my build thread on the Extra 260 + SPE40. All is there. eg. engine, servos (all Futaba), props used.

Otherwise send me a PM as I dont want to hijack this thread

2nd RX switch as per Howies (from DA) instructions. Smart Fly said I couldnt use a "Y" leas as the kill needs a channel to itself.

Rhino Kill sounds good
