Default Lock out in 5 feet

OK Bought a used but like new airplane last summer in August and the guy said if I flew JR I can have a 10 ch PCM receiver for $100 more. When I got it I tested it and it didnt pass a range test. I e-mailed the guy and he said it was working fine for him in the plane I bought.
I wanted him to take it back or send it in and fix it. He wasnt happy about me sending it back to him for inspection and he said he was about to go on vacation and will be gone for several weeks. I decided not to send it and have it left on his porch for weeks. So I just set it on the shelf and had a ball flying with a diferent PCM reciever. Like a dummy I forgot about it for 3 months and then I sent a e-mail just asking if he will still look at it and test
it for himself, and the guy wont even return my e-mails. So I got :nanahump: I will move on and decided to send it in to JR this spring and just get it fixed with a note saying it locks out in just 5 feet. (the worst range test I ever saw) They call me and tell me it works fine and passes all tests and actualy is in perfect tune !

OK so I get it back and It still wont work past 5 feet. Think it might be my setup ?
NO It's not even in a plane. I have a new charged Duralite battery , New Duralite 6v REG and a New 8611a servo. So I changed To a diferent Duralite battery and a New 5.3v reg and a New DS821 servo with same results.
So Im pulling my hair out and try changing Moduals and christal ! still wont work past 5 feet !! I have only got to fly a few times this spring do to lots of snow and bad weather. And I havent had a problem with other models.

But I want to fly my new 40% Yak but the thaught of my TX not having a good signal is in the back of my mind.

I guess I will just send in the the TX and RX with my Duralites and servos, so they can try it. Better safe than to crash a airplane.

This is the best excuse to tell my wife I should have a backup radio. Only if the new JR 12X was out.

Just my experience.....I've sent a JR955s rx in 3 times....I've crashed 1 plane twice with that RX in it and almost crashed another plane with that RX in it.

Everytime it comes back with "clean bill of health" That rx is now in the trash.

I would chalk it up as a loss......$100 rx or a $$$$$ airplane?

This may or may not have been covered but the 955 is a single conversion receiver and requires the single conversion (grey) colored crystal. What color crystals have you tried in the receiver?

If you have one of the dual conversion (red or orange) crystals in the receiver it will not range check worth a darn.

Thanks-

That would be your problem! 945 requires a dual conversion crystal. Also make sure to tape it in.

I just ordered a red one from Horizon. I have 6 or 7 JR PCM recievers and they all must be singal conversion. You learn something every day in this hobby. No matter how long you have been flying.I try to get more guys in the club to use forums like this for just this reason. THANKS

Do you need a dual conversion TX crystal as well?

I guess my question would be if you sent the RX in to Horizon service, did it have the offending crystal in it? If so........ Why didn't Horizon service pick up on this faux paux? I have a couple of 9303's and a couple of 10X's and I wouldn't feel really good knowing somebody wouldn't have caught this at the service bench. Just a thought..........
