We view orange plastic safety netting as a means to stop the engine, thereby protecting the pilot and spectators from a spinning prop. The fence has been hit twice causing the engine to stop and as a side benefit minimal damage to the aircraft.

Our field used to let the grass grow up in 5 places about 10 feet wide with a 10 foot spacing between them. It made a nice natural barrier and worked well, but about a year ago they mowed it down and put up the green snow fence stuff that looks very similiar to the orange but blends in better. I have seen several wings get damaged from hitting this stuff but it stopped the plane. I still like the grass idea better.

My home club uses nothing, but I visited a club in Toledo that had the high, thick grass between the pilot stations and the strip. I really liked it much better than the orange snow fence.

As a side note we hung a "Right Rudder Please" sign at the old timer bench.

...Huh? You mean the rudder still works on takeoff and in the air? I thought it was only for slow taxiing. Proper procedure for takeoff is line up straight, punch the power, and just before the plane tears into the pits, yank full up elevator. Learn something new every day.

Our club uses tall grass to separate runway and pilots. Much better than fence... airplanes don't get destroyed. Also much harder to trip over.

At our field we use metal chain link fence post and top rails and then attach the orange plastic safety fence with zip ties. Works great. It has been up for about 3 yrs now.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for your thoughts. We just recently got our field "turned on" by the city so we are going through the process of figuring all this stuff out.

Lots of good info here.

Thanks.

Don't know if I like those 2' high barriers. Seems like it would be easy to not see it and trip while flying.

We have PVC pilot stations, which are about 4' high (with tops for timers, TX's, etc.), and wrap around very slightly on the sides. The fence is chain link. No RF issues.

Never had an issue with tripping. I think 4 ft would give more protection, and a spot to sit timers and Xmitters would be nice.

Charlotte Aeromodelers recently erected a new safety fence using a heavy gauge plastic fencing named Sentry Secure Heavy Duty Construction/Security fence bought from US Netting <www.usnetting.com>. Ask for Kelly. $104.00 for a 4x50 ft roll.

Hope this helps....

If Tony see this, maybe he can post some pics.

The hedges are nice for sure but high maintenance. 30" high should be the max height so us short guys don't get our antenna's stuck in the hedges, 24" to me is the perfect height.
