Finally got my 40% 260 in from TBM today. I ordered it on the 17th of april and got it today (May 4th). Got lost in shipping.
It was worth the wait! This baby is purddy! I will be building it over the next week and a half. I am running a 3W 150 for power on standard exhaust. Futaba will provide the guidance for the airframe. For the power system I am running the trusty Smart-Fly Power Expander Pro with the turbo regulator. I am using 2 TBM 5600 mAh packs for power, a fromeco Relion 2 cell will provide power for the ignition, SWB 3 servo tray with SWB arms, Airwild arms on all ther surfaces, extensions will be made custom for the plane, RC Blimp carbon V2 tail wheel, SD carbon main landing gear, Pete's Models 5" carbon Spinner, Beila 32 x 8 x 14 prop, and Hitec 5955tg on all surfaces (13 to be exact). The throw the the surfaces get is unreal.. Not like you would ever use it...

Had to break for dinner, but here is some of the progress... Firewall on, and motor mounted. Required no spacing. I also have mounted the tail wheel, and for temp. use the main gear is on until the backordered carbon gear comes from TBM. Here's a few pics....

Let me start by saying that this cowl really kicked my a $ $. I don't care for a two piece cowl at all. I know most people probally just throw these things togeather, but my two halfs were different and didn't match up perfect. Took some work to get it to fit to the fuse correctly. Anyways... So I used about a million 4-40 button head stainless screws with blind nuts to attach the two halfs. I hope to god I never have to take it back apart. It sure looks nice though. I also put the top hatch on the motor box and mounted ignition and battery. I also mounted the switch for the ignition. Also mounted the throttle servo and linkage. I did baffle my cowl, and this also kicked my butt. It was my first experience ever doing it and was not a good one either. I did get it and probally will have someone on here saying it looks like poop but hey I tried. The air does have to go over the heads now so it has to help. I also painted the baffle to match the cowl. I also started getting the SWB tray in the fuse to get it mounted. It's 10:00 pm and I am going to go hinge everything and call it a night. I won't be making anymore progress for a few days. My wife and I are going to the hospital because we are going to bring our son into this world. She is being induced tommorrow night. So please excuse my delay! LOL Its like the best week ever for me. My new baby son is comming, and I got my first 40% plane. Can't wait to post a pic of him sporting a Flying Giants hat!

I am so blessed! My son was born the 8th at 4:01pm. I don't think that any single event in my life will ever leave a better, and bigger impression on me! Had to put a pic of him on here just to brag a little! Cute as hell!
Ok back to the plane. For hinges I used gorilla glue. I prefer this glue because of how it expands and seems to hold up better over time vs. epoxy. I melt down some vasaline and smear it on the areas I do not want the glue to stick to the monokote. That way I do not have to watch it all night and clean up the mess as it expands. You just glue, tape and the next morning its perfect. The excess glue will bleed out but can break right off cleanly to make for perfect hinges! I made all my extensions from the airwild bulk wire. This way they are the perfect length. I don't know if I will ever do this method again because it was very time consuming! The little crimp on ends are so damn small, but then again it is so much cleaner than zip ties holding excess! I also mounted all the servos for the ailerons, and elevators. The rudder tray is also mounted into place. All the servo's have been programmed so there is going to be no binding. I am using SWB 1.5" arms for the surfaces. Should give plenty of deflection for any pilot! I also mounted my turbo regulator and power expander. Really all I have left is control rods, canopy, pilot, dash, pull pull, and mounting the fuel tank. I am going to try to finish it up by friday. Things are crazy right now with the new baby. I have not slept in 2 days now. So off to bed I go. Enjoy.... |
