Default My first gasser motor install....look ok?

hey guys...I got my WH 35% sukoi last week and i'm attempting to do the build the best i can. Everything seems to be going really good so far and i'm totally happy with the way things are turning out. I'm taking my time with it , since i still have a couple weeks to go before i can afford the rest of my servo's......but i tried to do the cleanest looking install i could. The airplane comes with "0" degree's right thrust , and supposivley for 3-D type flying it's supposed to work really well. I off-set the motor by 3/16" to the left , so if i was to add a little right thrust , the spinner should end up right in the middle. Here is a couple pics of my install , and with the header/cannister retro fitted in place. Motor is a BME 115 , with DA-100 header's , with the exhust stack cut off and a new set of BME stacks put on. cannister's are MTW 75's.

make sure you put some clamps on the couplers or they will work themselves off.

Jeff,

Dude where's the indoor/outdoor carpeting???? Hehehehehe

It's looking shweet as far as degrees of thrust I think most folks are shooting for between 2 1/2 and 3 degrees. Ya definitely want to counteract that torque!! You can always adjust a little more or less later on. What kinda of servos ya going to put in that thing???

Hey sweetpea.........yes , i will definetly have the clamps all mounted up as well , but i can't do that until i get my gear installed. I'm sending off my gear to Mike at Graphtech , to get a set of CF gear made to offset some of the weight of the motor mount and cannister's.

Ron.....For some odd reason , this airplane fly's well with "0" degree's thrust , for 3D type flying. the guys doing IMAC with it however are adding about 3 Degree's right thrust and about 1-2 degree down thrust. I'm going to start out with "0" and work my way up from there. I made the mount so it's going to be easy to add a little right thrust if i need to.

as far as the electronics goes......it's going with a SF power expander pro , SF turbo reg , SF optical kill switch , all fromeco switches , batteries and the one regulator for the ignition. Servo's will be 5955's everywhere except throttle.

Hopefully , by the time i get my gear back , i'll have the rest of my servo's and switches. As of right now though , i made a set of shorter landing gear so it's easier to work on it on my table. It was great for working on the smaller planes , but sheeeesh......these gasser's are bigger. gary's 33% SD yak is tall.......mine is going to sit about 4" taller than that. I think i'm going to modify my table a little at the end and make some type of a cradel of some type to hold my plane.

IF......everything goes right , i should be able to maiden it within about 3-4 weeks tops.........i'm hoping anyways. I just want to fly it in june some time.......that marks my one year of flying , and i told myself i wanted to be flying a gasser in a year. last june , i was flying a worlds model high wing skyraider...HAHA!! Hopefully my sukoi will fly better........i'm having a good feeling it will.

This is small and misc........but i just looked at my pictures here on this thread , and if you look real close , the bottom ( or actually the top) of the firewall is a brown looking color. Almost looks like the piant jopb got botched.......but it's a solid black colore...........must be the flash on the camera playing tricks on me i guess.

Doesn't matter what kind of flying you're going to be doing... You really need to get some right thrust in there.

I'm not very good with math........but if i was to add let's say a 1/16" washer on the two left mount bolts....what would be the degree of the motor? the BME is considerd a short motor to begin with ( 5-1/2" long to be exact) I wonder if i should throw one washer on before my maiden flight? How do you actually figure out what degree your moving your motor?

1/16th is around 1 degree but be careful not to tweak the mounting lugs on your engine as then they will snap off---oh ya really nice looking job on the install

Looking good JEFFRO503, Just one thing don't forget to leave a good 3/8" gap between the headers and the canisters where they are joined with the teflon couplers.

1/16 inch will have different degrees of offset depending on the width of the mounting points.
Yes be carefull on the flat install with this offset,

I always machine in the offsets on the standoffs I sell makes for a better fit.

Just my two cents for the day.

Dude do the landing gear go into that fuse vertically? i looks like you set it on its back and the mounts go strait in the fuse.

a good incedence meter will help with the degree offset.....

OK........the motor back plate is a 2-5/8" sqaured for all four holes. I'm not sure what a DA 100 or 3W 106 would be , but my back plate is not very big. Also....with the motor being only 5-1/2" long ( very short motor....but very light) the measurement from the firewall to the outside lip of the cowl is exactly 8-1/8". I made the motor mount 3-3/4" long , because i wanted to make sure i got the motor pushed out there a little to help on the balance of the airplane and to get some good prop clearance to be efficient. with a 1/8" spinner back plate it put's my prop out at 1-1/4" at the bottom and 1-1/2" at the top.

I was shooting got about a 1/4" gap between header and can , and will play around with that as i get some time on the motor.

Also...here is a pic of the inside of where the landing gear bolts up. If you look closely , there are two bolts which bolt to the side of the fuse and two that need to be drilled by myself that go through the deck. Remember the airplane is upside down right now in these pics. The gear that is on the pictures on the first post however are a home made set that are about 8" shorter. I made them so i could get to work on the sukoi a little better.......as my table is kind of tall.

Also.....in the pic below , you can see that the left side gear was bent incorrectly for the second set of holes. No big deal though , since the gear it'self put the wheels themselves at exactly the distance and stance. BUT..........this stock set of gear is already gone. I shipped them out to Mike at Graphtech and i'm getting a new set of CF gear made , which i hopefully can get a bow put into them , to make the sukoi 26 more scale looking. thought i'd better do that now , before i tweaked them after a while. Also guys....on the aluminum gear there is an aluminum strap that bolts up between the gear legs , to help from flexing to much. All the guys flying it , said the gear is holding up fine...........i just wanted something a little different.

One more thing.......all the guys who tested this airplane and the other's that are flying it told me to try it out with the "0" degree offset and go from there. I will try the incedence meter we have here and see if i can gauge it off of that.
