Ultra RC yak wing covering
Well on the 3rd flight of my 35% yak I heard a strange noise while flying, after coming back around I see some covering hanging off the wing! So I bring it down and to my amazement, the whole wing panel covering came off! I wasn't even doing any hard maneuvers or flying Mach 1. It appears the covering wasn't over lapped enough on the leading edge and the seam is at the center of the edge as opposed to being down further on the bottom of the edge of the wing.
I had called Brian at Ultra Rc to see what the scoop is.We'll see.

It is ultracote/Oracover.
Did you go over the plane with the iron? |

That happen to some people that bought a first production run of another brand 50cc yak. They came out with the seam right along the leading edge of the wing (bad thing to do!!!!) The manufacture came out and sent every owner clear tape to put along the leading edge to prevent what happen to you. Second run they fixed by overlapping the seam further back.

I did read somewhere that the 50cc had a change in their directions that added that one should put clear covering over the seams on the leading edges.

Its ultracote, the construction is excellent, everything is splined/dado together.

Ya , when I got the plane I ran the iron over the whole thing, never thought about putting clear tape or ultracote on the leading edge seam....I guess I will now.

I had sealed the leading edge of the wings on my 107" with clear Ultracoat, but I did not do that on the stabs for some reason. I had ironed them down well, of course. Well, wheeling my plane back into the pits today I noticed that the leading edge seam on the port-side horizontal stab had come loose and the coating was starting to peel off.
So I'd suggest sealing the horizontal stab LE seams as well. Greg |

I had the very same thing happen to the right wing on a EF 87" Yak (the original ones) at the biggest public display in the UK. I think as its still got a "sealed" wing, so it creates lift so i managed to get it down OK with minimal damage, thankfully, wasn't my plane!
Bearing in mind that the planes are from the same factory....... and we had the same problem, the overlap wasn't big enough (plus it had been re-shrunk) and air got under and tore it off. Glad to see you got it down OK though
