Bad-ass Super Contributer!

I saw refrence to a 50% dalton and did some calculations:
42% 124" wing span 50% 147" wingspan so the 50% is approx 16% larger wingspan that the 42% 32% larger surface area 64% larger volume volume=weight because the density of the materials does not change this means that if a 42% weighs an average of 37pounds then the 50% would weigh 60.5 pounds.(this is conservative because when you go up in size with the same strength building materials you typically have to add more support to achieve the same strength) If a 16 HP DA 150 powers a 37 pound 42% then to get the same power to weight ratio on a 50% you would need around 27 horse power. The AMA has a 55lb limit Tony How do you plan to keep the weight below 55lbs without sacrasfying strength? |

I think 90% of the 50%+ planes all need signed waivers to fly and are topping out at over 55lbs. There are a few 300cc motors available that can haul a 50%+ plane around NP.

HERE we go:
Bill Hempel's Bad Ass 52% Edge 540 has been test flown! Click here to see the first flight of this 75 pound model as Bill gets to know his new airplane. Half way through his first flight the 3W-342cc engine quit running do to a too low RPM idle setting. The first landing was a dead-stick! The airplane was flown twice in front of an AMA inspector who signed the airplane off as being safe and legal to fly. Bill will now spend time going over the airplane and install a smoke pump for the upcomming airshow circuit. I am sure with a lot of practice flights, Bill will have a hell of an airshow plane! For more information on AMA aircraft over 55lbs. Click here sections 520a-c (sorry no links, copied it off Bills site.)

The fuselage will be air tight so I can fill it with helium. Man this project is so far away I really havent put much thought into it. I think with some of the motors that will be coming out in the future that it is possible to get it under 55lbs.
And before all you techys start I know that filling it with helium will not physically make it weigh less so save your post

Actuall a sealed fuseladge full of helium would weigh less that one of air. Assume a 50% plane has one cubic meter of Volume in the fuse. From the CRC manual then the air inside this volume at atmospheric pressure and room temperature would weigh 2.654lb The same volume of Helium would weigh 0.707lb, so by sucking out the air and back filling with helium the apparent weight of the plane as a whole would be 1.947lbs less.....LOL Sorry I couldn't resist.

how about 3 BME 110's inline....that would rock plus it would only weigh like 10 lbs and swing a 45" prop

If I could get it under 55 lbs and there were no issues with it is there much of a interest in having something this big? |

I think instead of making a 50%, make something designed around the 200cc market.....probably be 47-48% 130something inch range
3w 200/212 ZDZ 210 DA200 (if it gets released)
