Jim, check the ignition timing, it sounded like it was a little retarded.

A quote from another THOR owner over on the thread at RCU :
I saw the video your engine sounds too rich. I had the same and turned the high speed needle to lean (the instruction says 5 degrees at a time but ithink mine was around 10 to 12 degrees clockwise)and did the same to low speed and re-adusted the idle on the TX and it flies great with plenty power. I am flying a Black Horse CAP 232 swinging a 20 x 10 prop and mine weighs over 16 lbs and certainly seems to have a better performance than the video I just saw. Alan |

I know that if you have them closer, in most cases this will afford more throw... but trust me, I am getting PLENTY of throw with mine set up like this. AND... you will HAVE to use the ball link at the servo arm instead of a saftey quick link to allow for the up and down swing of the arm... (see 2nd pic) this also raises up the rod higher at the servo which aids in the overall travel. Jim Last edited by Fishdeth; 07-15-2007 at 06:39 PM. |

Well, I have a couple things I found and I'm not sure if it is just one or a combination of all that are causing the erratic running of the engine.
1st suspect is that Chinese spark plug. 2nd, that plug was loose upon post flight inspection. (The grounding wire is attached under the plug) 3rd, is the vent hole on the diaphram plate of the carb. (I am gonna solder the brass tube over the hole and run a piece of fuel line back away from all the turbulent air) 4th is the ignition timing. (The book calls for 12 - 14 degrees BTDC and I find mine to be at 21 degrees) Any input guys ? Jim |

Jim,
Assuming the ignition is auto advance you are way too far advanced with the timing. Most GOOD ignitions will be set with the magnet in the hub just entering the hall sensor with the piston at TDC. If your setup has the normal 30 degrees auto advance you have nearly 50 degrees advance at full throttle. That will kill your engine as well as seriously degrade its performance. Two to Four degrees BTDC static timed should make your engine start really easily yet have lots of power. The plug can be suspect of course and it not being tight wont help either but that timing is problem No 1. Fix that and see what happens. |

Kiwi,
Thanks for the reply man ! The ignition is NOT auto advance, but a fixed timing electronic ignition module. I was also reading back on page 7-8 of the THOR thread on RCU that the velocity stack might need to be sheilded as well ??? Jim |

Jim.
Oh my dumb then mate, Actually 21 degrees then wont be be too bad. Most engines run full throttle with 30 degrees but they wont dang start flipping them if they are set that far advanced. Definitely try a new plug but if you have a spare auto advance ignition like a CH or similar then if you can adapt it you will cure a lot of evils. |

I soldered a brass tube to the diaphram plate and ran a piece of fuel tubing rearward.
I need to get a little longer piece of tube tho so I can take it a little farther back. |
