in summary getting a 5 instead of a 10 on sound is about the same as getting a 6 vs an 8 on a manuever!

example in unlimited sound is 12k so a 5 would be 60 raw points and a 10 would be 120 raw points. loss 60 points

Now figure 6 in the unlimited known is 30k a score of 6 would be 180 points a score of 9 would be 270 points a difference of 90 points.

get a 5 instead of a 10 on every sequence flown and it could cost you the contest!!!
I know this isnt the IMAC forum and is way off topic but.....

The judges arent doing theyre job properly if they are handing out a score spread of between 6 and 9 on all scored manouvers.
When I judge, especially the unlimited guys I am often handing out 4's, 5's even 3's and 2's, some of the manouvers flown in unlimited have very high k factors and have so many elements in them that it would be a very 'nice' judge or an absolutely exceptional pilot to consistently give 6's and above 95% of the time.

If the scores in your comp are looking to have a 3 point range there is a fair chance your judges are impression judging, I judge each manouver on its merit, applying the 1 point per 10 criteria. Throw in mulitiple snap and opposite point roll combinations its not difficult to give even a well flown manouver a cumulaitive deduction of 4 or 5.
On the other hand if its flown only average those deductions will rack up real fast.

I totally agree, and judge that way. we are the 5%. The point I am trying to make is that a 5 vs a 10 on sound can cost you a decent amount of raw points prior to normalization.

Reguardless if a judge gives 6-9 and 0, or 0-10, the scores are normalized and the best pilot wins, unless the flying/scores are really close then the pilot with the quietest plane may win.

OK gotcha....... it is a worry if 95% of judges are impression judging though.

We are lucky, here in Australia we havnt had any comps where the sound score has needed to be applied yet. I am sure they will come, but so far noise isnt a worry at the majority of our IMAC venues.
Having said that, there isnt many Aussie IMAC machines out there that arent already running cannisters and carbon props.

My statements are based on crunching numbers, go to Max's one dude into IMAC thread and look at the analysis i did of his scores.

The statement we are the 5% was a little much, honestly even applying 1 per 10 etc etc etc....most pilots fly between a 6 and a 9.

Personally I place my hands on my knees fingers spread and as I see a deduction(1 per 10) line length before and after) radius change , wobble etc.. I pull back fingers. Say I have 6 fingers left the score will be 5.5, 6, or 6.5 (since I canm't pull back 1/2 of a finger).

We have the ASAA (Australian Scale Aerobatics Association). I think that makes us our own 'region' if you want to put it that way.
