O yea and Dalton will last a while and stand very hard landings. Even when the gear bend all the way in.

I don't understand why the 3W Yak is second choice to the Dalton? I would have guessed opposite..

This has turned out to be a very useful thread to me since I am now making the same decision. I have been leaning towards the Godfrey but no one seems to talk about it. How does the Godfrey compare for free style? That will be my main type of flying.

I hear ya, Jon- the 38% CA that I have seems to get forgotten about. Kyle seemed to have no problem last month with it (then again he can make anything look good) and kept askin' to fly it!! |

Yeah, that was Kyle last month flying my Extra. As for bad habbits, none to speak of and is the easiest plane I've ever flown- for precision and 3D. As for coupling on KE, I have a 2% up elevator mix, which is hardly anything. Dunny |

Has anyone who has flown the WH 41% also flown the Carden or Dalton? How would you compare them? I'd really like to hear a side-by-side comparison but they don't seem to exist... only smart remarks.

I pick this one because I have one for sale, built, used, good condition for only $2200.00
It satisfies all your criteria except with a DA150, it is not as fast as a smaller plane... it is a 3.1 meter span..... VIDEO HERE I include a bunch of stuff with the bare airframe. (I want to sell the FUTABA scheme to buy a Fantasy Scheme!)

I vote for the Carden 300 it is awesome. I have about 60 flights on mine and it is very agile and rock solid. Inverted harriers with no wing rock, great snaps and IMO the nicest lines of all the kits out there. If you want to build this plane rocks.

Overtemp, I have flown every Dalton: the 35%, the 42% 260, and the 39% 300. None of them have any "weird things" when they roll. I actually think they're the best rolling airplanes I have flown. Then again they were set-up by Mark Leseberg.

All of the previously mentioned planes are wonderful. I think it boils down to how well you set up the plane. I've seen 3 planes - the same model - all fly radically different because of what & how they were loaded with gear & how well they were dialed in. A great set up can make a great plane fly great - a less than great set up - less!

It seems to me that the best airplane for low surface coupling & for stability in harrier & hover, is really the YAK54 style airframe. The E260 is good too...BUT....I've seen them to be a little more tipsy in terms of tipstall...atleast I saw that with the wildhare 260(I guy at the field has one). I think it is due to the wing shape & chord...YAKs have more wing chord near the fuse. If I had the money, I'd buy a 3W YAK, 2nd choice would the new QQAC(somezini) 120inch YAK. The QQAC yak will be ~41-42 pounds WITH Quiet Cannisters, as per somenzini's website, QQAC is honest about the weight. Other kit builders seem to consistently understate their weight. Given the huge wing area on the YAKs, especially QQAC one, I don't think the wing loading increase is too much...you can check my math....On such a large wing, an extra 1.5pnds, which is the weight difference between the 3W YAK, and the QQAC YAK will be another 1.25oz/sft of wing loading...this only changes your stall speed from ~21.2 to 21.6 miles/hour....a small difference, which I doubt any of us will even notice. Of course the absolute stall speeds will be a function of the airfoil....but the relative difference for any given airfoil for an extra 1.5pnds over a 2800sq.inches of wing should be the same.
You will notice the price difference. 3W YAK is $4600, I think QQAC will be about 1/2 that....but the price is not yet anounced, since I think it is available only next month. I have a QQAC 102inch YAK...which is the best fyling airplane I've ever had. Again, I'd prefer the 3W YAK...but for that 1.5pnds of weight savings, you have to spend another $2500 probably... In terms of power, today's 150cc engines, DA or 3W should haul ass for such weight. If you are really into power, try the 3W CS versions. I have 2 of them...wicked power....I also have a DA100, it runs great...but not the same top-end. You can choose to forgo cannister mufflers, and use bolt-on mufflers, on a 150cc class engine, that will save you ~1.5pnds. |
