I was told 1 1/4" for Aileron and elevator and 3" for rudder.

Hi OneWing, I didnt use any of the supplied horns or hardware I used some thicker ones from Desert Aircraft, JR 1.5 in Aluminium horns and titanium turnbuckles with ball links either end. The hardware supplied would also be fine though, it was just a quicker option for me - and I am very happy with the setup. I also used JR servo holders in the wings for the Aileron servos for the same reason. I have just measured the supplied rudder horn and it is 2.5 in for those who were asking.
Cheers Scotty |

Just to make one thing crystal clear. The control surface horns Scotty used are very stiff. It is 2.5mm thick G11 epoxy board. (PCB type material.) Since it is so stiff you can use a ball link on it without any worry of flexing inducing flutter.
As per the CARF instructions, you cannot use ball links on the horns supplied with the kit. |

Thanks Howie, I should have mentioned that again. I believe the supplied hardware would be fine provided it is used the way it is intended - as per the instructions! To use the ball link setup shown on my model you will need to upgrade all of the hardware. I hope I havent confused anyone.

You can use ball links on the servo with metal arms and clevis on the stock control horns. But you may need to align the servo with the surface horn. That's what i had to do with the 2.6m extra

Hi OneWing, Yes Desert Hucker is spot on - it is probably possible to use a combination of metal horns and the CARF control surface horns, although they would not line up without modification as the ball links stand about 5mm off the metal horns. Probably easier to go all standard or all ball links and upgrade the control surface horns. cheers
