Default Where to Soar in NE Oregon

I moved here to NE Oregon from the central California coast about four and a half years ago and really love it here. I have my own runway on a small ranch-et in a valley on the North fork of the John Day River. I have been unable to locate a flying site for my sailplanes. I would really like to find a good location for sloap soaring. I have a composite 60" racer and a couple of Zagi's that I would like to blow the dust of off. A good place to soar the Spot Dorker would be nice. It seems to me that I have some recollection of reading about flying meets over Hells Canyon but the memory is faint and looking on the map Hells canyon is a big place. If anyone can point me in a direction it would be appreciated.

Would Table Rock Be East of Medford and Ashland. Google maps puts a Crane Mountain South East of Burnes. Both are a good drive for me and I must do more resurch before I just take off. It cost me fifty dollers to drive my pickup to town.

Subsequently in my research I have found out about a club Called Mid-Columbia Soarer's the fly out of the Try Cities area in Washington state. The have sod farm circle for winch and high start flying and three different hills for slope soring. They are about a hundred and fifty miles away from me. I would still like to find something closer. Hermiston La Grand or Baker would be better. The Mid-Columbia Soarer's does seem well established.

http://www.alpinesoaring.us/AlpineSoaring.pdf is an excellent place to start.

I do all of my slope soaring at Cape Blanco near Port Orford.

Yep, and it is next weekend. It is sponsered by Quiet Flyer magazine.

Also, there are three world class slopes just north of you at Tri-cities. Search this and other forums for events.

Fly safe, Glover

ElfinSailor, if you're in Umatilla, OR as your profile says you are about a 10 minute drive from some of the best sloping on the planet. Eagle Butte, Kiona Butte and Chandler Butte. For Eagle you need to be a member of this club to fly there: http://mcs.rchomepage.com/ and for Chandler and Kiona they're in a state park so it's free. For more details check out this page: http://www.shredair.com/ and look under "Tri-Slope Six-Pack". There's also descriptions of the various slopes on that site, how to get there, what winds they work in, etc.

If you want to slope soar, you are pretty much living in THE spot to do it.

Contact Paul Naton here:

http://radiocarbonart.com/

If it can be flown, Paul has flown there!! And as stated before, the slopes in the Tri-Cities area are spectacular.

Niel thanks for that. Since posting tis thread I have read about the Mid Columbia Soarer's out of the Try Cities, WA. I do intend to get in touch with them soon. As I am in the Blue Mountains just a couple of miles from the Grant County line I am about a hundred and fifty miles from The Try Cities. So I must plan that trip as a major jump. I am sure there must be places here where I live but they are mostly private ranches now owned by banks and finance company's and have strict no trespassing policies.
Judge I will contact Radio Carbon Art his website looks interesting to me. ElfinSailor
