Made a testbed 52" wingspan version of the Clik indoor F3P foamie. Planning a 80-100" version. This one is only encouraging me.
My buddy Blake maidened it today on 3s for the first flight=OK. Next 3 flights on 4s were right on. Thought the weight be an issue, but it flew great in 10mph winds. Still a floater. Elevators straight down with no wing rock. Harriers upright and inverted with no wing rock. Did I mention no wing rock? KE's require 3 deg. to none on rudder input! Almost flies KE with no rudder input. Sweet! Had to tone the rudder down big time. Don't need it with the generous side area. This design translates well from indoor feather to heavier outdoor flyer. Still have a couple of minor issues to work on, but otherwise this is my new 3D/pattern beater plane. Foam costs about $11 per sheet so replacement airframes won't break the bank. The carbon wing tubes and reinforcements for the big one will! Oh well all in good fun! Will try to post some video soon. Blake took about 2 minutes to start dragging the rudder inverted thru the grass, so he got comfortable with the plane as soon as the trimming stopped! Stay tuned for more and larger developments....

Man this thing rocks! Got 4 great flights in today and it's such a sweet machine. Slow and controllable no bad habits. KE's are sick! Very little rudder input needed an any rolling manuever. Lollipops are easy and small diameter if you want. Big smile factor on this one. Will try and shoot some video this weekend.

Same material, just 1/2" thick 4' x 8' sheets. You could laminate 3 layers together, the center one being a skeleton frame. I just did the 1/2" for simplicity. I'll probably use the same thickness on the the larger one. Just double up the material around the nose area probably.

Here's something to watch while you munch. Wind started blasting by the end of the flight. Kind of ruined some 3D flying but will shoot some more video after retesting turbulators. They were taped on in sets and just as well=there needs to be more of them, larger fins, and more toe-in(45 deg). 13 x 4 prop seemed to provide good pull and constant speed. Moved motor and pack forward 1-1/4" to help with tracking. Enjoy!

That will take a few weeks. Got another big electric to get off the bench first then on to the Clik XXL. Plus I have some more tweaking to do on this one before figuring out what I need to do with the next one. But lessons learned. The larger one shouldn't have as great a learning curve. I quess there's a reason you don't see many giant scale foamies. Kind of unwieldy, prone to hanger rash, and hard to engineer correctly. I've seen some huge foam planes but even a "medium to large" foamie is a logistical nightmare. But it's all good fun. Should be a riot seeing a giant scale foamie ghosting around the yard!
Stay tuned for more improvements and video....

Here's some shots of the newer, larger test VG's. Hopefully these will provide enough braking and then I'll install permanent 6mm sets. More video soon...

Here's another vid of the Clik XL being tested for props and VG size and number. 13 x 4 prop seems to be the one. ESC was having some issues, traced to a hairline fracture in the prop. Will get some more APC's and a Xoar to test out too.

Thanks, that's my friend Blake Hilson on the sticks! I used a Torque 2814/820/TP 4s 2070(trying to keep it light not worried about flight times) Airboss 45 ESC/ and APC 13 x 4E prop. Probably needs some Futaba 3115 servos, but all I had laying around were HS-65MG's and HS-85MGs so that's what's on there for now. I'm sure lighter construction/materials could be used, but that wasn't the point on this plane. Just to test out design and materials for the larger 100" wingspan version. David K. the designer is planning on making one for himself too, but is too busy producing his other designs to kit this one for now. Hopefully he'll make kit's available in the future. Go to RCGroups.com and look under "Electric Airplanes/Indoor-F3P" Clik Prototype for more info on the smaller indoor version. Or if you're impatient like me, buy the kit from NorthEast Sailplanes and blow up the parts on your printer!
