You know how we talk about the "expiration date" on our airplanes?
Well most times we experience that prematurely because of a dumb thumb, some kind of mechanical (re: electrical, engine related, battery failure) or just a plain brain fart (re: forgot to fuel it after the last flight, forgot to put the wing bolts in, etc.).
Well this morning I experienced the true expiration date of a plane. That is the point in a planes life when it simply gives up the ghost and simply says to you "never more". No dumb thumb, plenty of gas, freshly charged batteries, all the screws were tight, plenty of altitude and all the controls were moving correctly.

I had just finished practicing a few rounds of IMAC for the upcoming Rocky Mount event. I decide to do a little freestyle and was doing some pop ups sliding with the wind when both left wings and the top right on the Ultimate sheared off. The fuselage went another 300 feet or so before landing on its side. No damage to the engine and the prop didn't even break but the fuselage didn't make it.

While it hurts to lose this plane it owes me nothing. Over the three years I have owned and flew it it has over three hundred and twenty flights logged and quite a few more that I forgot to write down. I have no idea how many flights it had on it before I acquired the Airframe.

I had even been talking to some of my club buds about retiring the airframe after this year because I was becoming concerned about the integrity of a 5 year old plane that gets the crap flown out of it. Guess I should have considered it sooner.

Anyway all things considered I think I realized this planes "true" expiration date.

First pic is of the three sheared wings, they landed directly underneath the spot where I did the pop up.
Second pic: the three wings and if you look in the upper part of the picture you can see some of my flying buds standing over the remains of were the fuselage landed Darn thing looked like large red javelin sailing thru the air.
I think the third pic is self explanatory.

PS. looking for a 40% airframe

Guys, I got my Model Aviation today, and the write up for FFT is GREAT!!! I only saw one mistake, in the whole thing, but other than that, it was a very favorable article for for RDRC and for FFT in general. Congratulations to all you guys, and I hope it helps pull in more donors and spectators this year!!!!

Hey Mike, sorry for the loss on the Ultimate even if it had been around for a while. One of our club members just lost a new ultimate with maybe 15-20 flights. I remembered having this picture when plane was in better shape.

Sorry about the plane Mike,,, but, as Mark McCellan says, "I SHALL NOT 3D MY IMAC PLANE",,,,hahah

I wish I could sign a contract saying my plane would last 3 years ,, I would sign it in a heartbeat.

I hate it for you, Mike. That was an awesome plane, and you always looked like you were having fun with it.

Good luck with whatever 40% plane you end up with.

I think I saw it the last time you had it apart. I believe it said it did not expire until around September of 2020. Sorry about the Ultimate Mike.
