the ultimate lands very easy i do come in for landings with a small amount of gas and my fingers do what i feel it needs from what the eyes see so it hard for me to say does it come in level, i would guess it does....

OK... thanks. My other gasser is a 100cc Edge, and it floats FOREVER.. I had an Aeroworks 50cc bipe, and it was a very smooth landing plane... There's a couple of these Ultimates at our field, and I can see that I'll need to stay in the throttle a little until I'm ready to sit down... should be fun.

I went up to the field this weekend to pick up a new J&J tailwheel for the Ultimate, and saw another Ultimate owner working on his elevator servo openings. I noticed while putting mine together that the holes were a little over-sized, and the screws were very close to missing wood.

The other guy's servos had literally worked themselves loose in the holes.

So, as a precautionary measure, I'm adding a little more ply behind the two elevator servo openings, just to make sure there's good wood behind the screws.

I got the 3W 170 mounted, and finally got the mufflers in yesterday... cranked it up today for the first time.... its a very smooth running motor, even for break-in.

OK.. here's a few pics. They're not great because I'm using a cell phone and shooting under a dark plane, and taking a picture of an area the size of a servo hole... but the are pics!

Basically, I cut 4 pieces of 1/4 inch plywod, about 3/4 wide (same width as the servo hole) by 1 1/2 inches long. I tried several times to CA these pieces to the inside of the servo holes, but my glue wouldn't dry fast enough, and I couldn't properly navigate the piece into place. So, I wound up using a small flat screwdriver blade to punch into the back side of the piece of wood, then go through the opposite servo hole, using the screwdriver as a guide. I put the pieces of plywood in place, and clamped them, one at a time, using a small C-clamp.

Actually, I'm only half way done right now, still have the left side to complete. Below are some pics of the unrepaired left side, you can see how close the servo screw holes are to the edge of the opening.. not a lot of plywood there to hold anything.

On the right side, the clamp blocks most of the view, but I did bring the plywood pieces just a little closer together to make the servo hole a little smaller, and as one of the pictures kind of shows, there's now a lot more wood for the screws to bite in to.

Hopefully I won't find myself in the same situation as the guy at the field on Sunday.

This would all be much easier during the build if you just insert these plywood blocks before you put the horizontal stab in place!!!

dont forget to fuel proof the new wood - if you run smoke it will penetrate the wood with oil - good job!!!

OK.. spent a little more time over the past few days, got the plane balanced today... as it turns out, I didn't have to move a thing! Its perfectly level at 9 3/4 inches behind the leading edge.

I extended the baffles back by about 1/2 an inch (there was originally a DA150 in this plane... now the temps on the ground never got over 210 at low RPM... that should give me a very cool operating temp in the air.

I need to do some work on a throttle curve at the field... even one up from idle seems to result in at least 300 RPM.

Other than that... I think its good to fly!

I used dual A123's on the receiver... the batteries fit perfectly in the slot next to the fuse sides, on either side of the pull/pull... the plane balanced PERFECT at 9 3/4... never had to move a thing.

I flew a couple of these at our field a few weeks ago.. looking forward to getting used to the drag. I didn't try, but one of the guys that has been flying these for years was amazing bringing it down to land.

I saw some pics earlier where someone installed a blind nut and screw on the top wing... I could see how this would hole one side tight against the center piece, but what are folks doing to eliminate the vibration between the center and the top wings?

Thanks.. so, is only 1 wing bolted to the center piece? The other one is still "free".... I know you still have the CF dowel that goes through the back side.
