I have a ZDZ super 80 that runs fine on the ground although shy about 800 rpm and as soon as I take off it sounds as if its going to die about every 2-3 seconds. The joke at the field is it sounds like a WW1 bi-plane running out of fuel. IT never quits running and when i land it again sounds fine.
no air leaks in the fuel lines carb is tite throttle servo has been replaced needles adjusted every way possible 26x10 tbm prop (nx) super sonic in cowl muffler 32:1 yamalube oil 224 degrees after landing 30% CA models extra 22 pounds |

Is it surging all the time? All needle setting or only where it is currently set at. And where are the needles sitting right now? How many turns out?

If it's surging 100% of the time....with the needle setting you have...I have no clue I would call RcShowcase. They know this engine better than anybody. I'm sure they can come up with a answer for you.

It gets a little better when inverted.

I would definitely give RC Showcase a call. Sounds almost like it could be an air pressure issue around the carb. Do you have a carb plate installed? I sometimes have the same issue with mine...but it is only while doing inverted flat spins. I am planning on trying a carb plate. Will let you know how it turns out.

I called RC Showcase (nice people) and they think it may be an air pressure issue also.
Howie, what needle setting do you have? your weather is like ours, hot and humid. I used to do a lot of business with a company in Garland, as i recall Rockwall is near a large lake. |

Try put in an extension hose on your air nipple, on the carb, this extension should go to a place where there are more or less constant airpressure during your flights.
Hope you understand what I mean. Joen |

Just got back from the field. I covered all the holes in the F1 former and most of the holes top and bottom of the engine box, installed a hose on the air nipple and ran it inside the fuse and this thing runs GREAT! I can't believe the power, It has unlimited vertical at 3/4 throttle . Can't wait until its broken in. when i landed the engine temp was about 230. do you think this is to high? my other gassers are about 190 after a flight.
Thanks for all your help |

Your temps seem a little high, but at the top end of acceptable I think. What I did with mine was to block off 95% of the cowl inlet with some 1/16 ply & leave the cutout in front of the motor just like you have it. What this does is force all the air through the cowl to pass over the cooling fins on its way out the cowl. I can put my hand on the motor after a flight without burning my hand. Dick Hanson is the expert in zdz motors, he is the one who helped me out...he knows his stuff

I’m going to put a Vess 26a prop on it to lessen the load on the engine until its broken in. This might lower the engine temp just a tad.
