Default New ignition for my 3w paperweight?

Hey guys, I made the mistake of purchasing a used 3w 106 paperweight. After investing a couple hundred in fixing undisclosed problems and getting it back from Aircraft International, it did a grand total of 3 flights before the POS died and the ignition is only firing on one cylinder. Honestly, I hate this thing, I would love nothing more than to get it as high as I can and dive it into the ground at full throttle to vaporize it, but the boat anchor wouldn't pull anything off the ground so I can destroy it, I've got too much in it to call it quits now, and I like all of my airframes too much.

So my question is, what are my ignition options? I know CH and 3w, I'm not getting another 3w, as I've read of too many problems with them. So, for those of you who have converted to a CH, is it a simple swap, or do you have to retime it, and drill new holes for the sensor in the motor? How about a DA ignition? It is something I can just swap on without any timing adjustments etc? I've never had an ounce of trouble with any of my DAs, ignition or otherwise, so if that is just a simple swap, I'd probably do that, just in the interest of having the same ignition on all my motors.

Forgot to mention, this engine has the older ignition that only has a single magnet in the hub. It's not the newer one that has 2 magnets.

You can just get a DA pickup and ignition. The pickup shoulb be at TDC. It is an easy conversion with the single magnet hub.

You may be able to swap that right out with a DA ignition. I think it was the older style ignition that was a direct swap. Don't quote me though. Hopefully someone can chime in here though.

The DA ignition would be the simple solution, however the C&H is a better unit than both DA and 3W. If you don't fell comfortable setting the timing, C&H will do it for you.

RCEXL. 2 year warranty and you get the sensor with it for $100.

I saw the RCEXL on the CH website. Any retiming with the RCEXL, or is it just plug and play?

Plane and RCign both have years of 3w experience. I would trust their opinions.

remove the cap that isn't sparking and see of the bare wire will spark against the cylinder or case. If it does its only the resistor in the cap that is bad. 20 bucks for a new plug cap and your in business.

It doesn't, they are new caps that Gerhardt installed at AI. The ignition is dead.

take rcign for his word then. He does know what he's talking about. The da ignition isnt that much better than the 3w one. some but not worth the expense of buying another ignition that cant be repaired.

The RCEXL ignition will also have to re-timed, it is essentially a chinese knock-off of the C&H and a very good ignition. These ignitions have very good advantages over the 3W and DA ignitions, but yes you have to set the timing and takes about 5 minute. The ignitions come with instructions on how to do it, very simple.
