Default Radio question from a newbie to gas

I'm looking at taking the leap into gas power. Been fly glow power for 10+yrs.
I'm looking at the 84" WildHare Edge 540 53 TOC or the Extreme Flight 74" Yak Brillelli 46 combo.
Here's my question/confusion. What radio equipment will I need... PCM? Spektrum? FM?
I've read somewhere that FM absolutely will not work and that you HAVE to go with PCM??? That being the case??? is 2.4 the better choice???
HELP!

go with pcm, it is a proven winner. 2.4 still has a lot of bugs in it and either you'll have nothing but fun flying with it or nothing but problems. I'd look into the futaba 9c

pcm is a modulated FM signal, good old FM will work fine.
With PCM you will just crash differently, none of the above is immune to interference.

Go with the Wild Hare it's the better of the 2. Excellent pricing and flight characteristics. You'll need high power servos and 2-3 batts.

as to the original poster....

If you have been flying for 10 years....then I can (hopefully) assume that you have a quality radio....

any QUALITY radio will fly a gasser just fine.... there is no mojo voodoo in them

Asking "Which is better, PPM or PCM?" is akin to "Which is better, Jr or Futaba?" Or... "what battery system should I run?"

There are as many answers as there are poeples opinions......

What Radio are you flying now? I'll bet it will do fine. What the higher end radios get you is ease of setup and better options for power and mixing.....
all make sense?

The DA manual actually recommends setting up the plane on PPM but only flying on PCM. Most PCM receivers have fail safe capabilities which are good for giant scale anything. There are PPM ones out there though with fail safes.

I've got two radios right now... Airtronics RD6000 and Hitec Eclipse7... will probably end up with a new radio when i make the jump though .

thewrap... said i need 2-3 batts? is that really needed in a plane like the wildhare? i know i need one for the ignition??? and then ofcourse the flight pack... do you mean i need a third pack as well??? I'm confused ... maybe i should stick with my trust aeroworks 90size 540... lol

I'm obviously entering unknown territory... lol. I've never had to use 2 packs on the receiver... How is that accomplished?

For the size of the plane your going for you don't have to... its just kind of a safety precaution...its just like you would 1 battery, you have 2 seperate switches and they both have there own port in the reciever.

Does that set up work with all receivers or do i need to purchase a specific model number????
So both batts are turned on at the same time? how does that not burn up the receiver??
Sorry for all the stupid questions.

It works with all Rx's

as mentioned at that size plane.. it is your choice.. In my 85" QQ Yak, I only run one battery and I am comfy with that.. others may not.. it is just a redundancy issue....
on my 40%, I run dual systems

Here is a description of a redundant system

with 2 batts plugged in you will have double the capacity but the same voltage as one pack, it's a parralel system.. for a 50cc plane one pack is fine but make sure it is a good pack capable of ~10amps peak or so depending on the servos you will be using.. sounds like you might just be sport flying it?
