Default Ashtabula race

If any of you have never seen a giant scale pylon race and you are near the Ashtabula Ohio area next weekend (August 16th - 19th) here is your chance.

Also, if you are thinking about the Hangre 9 Sundowner this will be the first time they will be racing head to head!

Come check it out

Martin.

You raised an eyebrow so I went searching for the Sundowner which ultimately lead me to the USRA class and specifications. Mate that just has to be a recipe for success and I will discuss with Max a way to get some more front page publicity for this type of racing.

Its always great to see new ideas to bring the fun to a level achievable by the average bloke. I can tell you if I was living State side I would be on that Sundowner racing like a blowfly at a BBQ. It just looks too much fun to not be a part of it.

Of course I would only be speculating but I suspect Pete Goldsmith was very much much involved in getting this off the ground as well.

Great stuff and and I hope we see much more of this type of activity here on the web site.

Thanks for opening my eyes to this aspect of racing.

Looking forward to seeing you Sleepy!

We're going to give this Sundowner class our best effort. We have some preliminary rules up at our site www.usrainfo.org and you can check out our forum too if you have questions www.usrainfo.org/forums/ikonboard.cgi

As we race these things a little, we will be looking for feedback from the participants and the officials about how we can improve things as we go along. Hopefully we'll get a few guys to come out and give it a try. I will say it is best to try to involve a few of your friends in this sport and make it a team effort. There's a lot of work involved, (too much for one person) and a lot of fun too (way too much for one person), so bring somebody along and share the experience!

Hey Kiwi....

Are you affiliated with Comp Arf? I see a mention in your signature.

At one time Robert Vess was working with them to produce a high-quality kit for our Formula 1 classes, but they got busy and stuck the project on the back-burner. We desperately need a good kit that's easily built and readily available so more people can try our sport out, so I'm hoping we can influence them into starting production someday.

Hi Kenny,

What's up with the mufflers? Are we racing Sundowners without or did everyone get one but me?

See you in OH,
Mike

Here's a few picture of my Sundowner, sans muffler. I spent the last week running up and down the stairs between drawing on the computer and cutting ultracote in the shop. I really just need to move the PC into the shop but the family probably wouldnt like it. Then they'd never see me. Still needs some work on the fuse between the wing and tail but I'm all out of ispiration.

Guys,

Anyone attending this weekends event can they please please please shoot some photos and get me bit of a story on the event. We thought we had this event covered but Murphy ruled once again and we are bare bummed for information. Guys these events really get a good following and we are trying hard to get some better coverage. If only the USA was 200 miles wide by 200 long we could cover them all. JK!!!

Any helpers out there please.

We had 5 Sundowners racing at Ashtabula, and considering that everybody put their maiden flight on the airplane at the race, it went pretty well. Looks like there are some issues with the engine getting air rammed into the carb inlet and having the mixture change dramatically in flight. A couple of guys had some success solving this with a little bit of tape on the inboard portion of the cowl's air inlet just in front of the carb. The other issue is the CG. With the extra weight of the 35GT, it's pretty important that you set your CG no further back than 3-1/8"... 3" would be safer. If you go any further back than that, you'll have a snap-rolling machine. We weren't seeing really high speeds on the racecourse...about 100 mph. We're still learning on this package, but we'll keep you posted.
