Guys, do yourself a favor and check the internals of your wings on a regular basis!
I think I just saved myself from another disaster . Two shear webs split, as did at least one of the ribs - this time on the right wing panel. I will know more after I get a flashlight in there, and will try to take some pics. What I can see doesn't look serious by itself. But since I check my wings before every day of flying as a habit, and did not see them last time, that tells me that something started to give. I have been flying primarily Intermediate IMAC sequences, only difference yesterday was that it was a bit windy/gusty, and the plane was getting bounced around up there. Still, definitely not conditions that the wing shouldn't have been able to handle... Last edited by TheTank; 11-25-2007 at 08:41 PM. |

Worked good on Friday's session of flying. Someone told me that even in break in you may need to tweak needles, cause you sure do not wnat engine to die.

Couple more hi res pics from today... Thank you for the heads up on the wings. Will inspect wings ASAP. This is the second time I heard of wing "ISSUES" with this plane, I hope this is not a widespread problem.

"I do feel that I need to mention a couple of things. First, after about 8 flights consisting of plenty of 3D and dozens of IMAC type snaps, the left wing developed a buckle in the sheeting on top of the leading edge that was visible beneath the covering. The buckle formed about 12" out from the root rib, began in the leading edge and extended back to the rear edge of the sheeting in a lazy arc. The sheeting was not cracked through, but it was significant enough that I notified Hangar 9 and they swapped me the damaged wing for a new one so that they can check it out and determine the cause of the issue." This is a quote about the wing. Yes mid 40's today plenty of sunshine.... had to go for the maiden today might not have good weather much longer. |

I watched my buddies 260 break the wing today. All of the ribs are broke and the main spar is loose. He was only flying the advanced sequence. It wasn't a violent flight at all.

That wasn't tailskid, was it? Bummer to hear...did he land it safe?
I took a closer look at my wing with a flashlight and mirror and did some structural tests on it. I think I can just glue the joints back that came loose and be good. If not, I have managed a one-winged landing before

Yep.
Hanger 9 has stated that these seem to be isolated events.

I talked to horizon yesterday, that's what they told me too. I know I'm not real hard on airplanes, this one seems to be a little more fragile than planes I've had in the past. The bottom line is it flys as good, if not better than any 35% on the market you just need to stay away from high G stuff (Parachutte, Wall, Blender, ect.) It's an awesome IMAC michine, I still love this plane.

My opinion on it is that there would be nothing wrong with the wing design if the wood used was of consistently high quality, as was the glue, and the proper amount of glue was used. The wing that failed on me had a lack of glue compared to the replacement wings, and the balsa used, pretty much everywhere, had the strength of a rice cake of the same thickness. The new wings had a little more glue and denser balsa. In talking to some of the other smaller ARF companies, I do know that there was a point in time, recently, where quality balsa was hard to come by... |

Oh .. I agree. I have many Hanger 9 planes and had not had any structural problems with any of them so far but I also dont want to lose such a nice $$$ plane either. Maybe better QC is need? Or are there just a few Rogue friday afternoon specials out there.??

I'm with you, it is my precision bird for now, and I have a QB 75cc plane for huckin'. I am pretty sure its wings will be fine, since they are smaller than the H9 wings, yet weigh the same amount ready to fly, and only have one servo per aileron! I will still TR and harrier roll the H9 and light stuff like that on occasion, though. FWIW, I looked at the other wing that I though was starting to fail and it looks like the only failures were the seperated joints that I saw in the shear webbing and the one rib. I glued them back together and added more glue in key areas and it feels as strong as the good wing. |
