Default Miami Valley 38% Laser 200 Engine Question

I'm looking for a little advice from you guys. I just recently picked up this Laser airframe and when I was at the guy's house picking it up, we weighed it at 19lbs give or take a few ounces with a 114" wing span. The only engine I have is a 3W-106 (Blue head TOC version). This engine is actually for a Aeroworks 260 that I am covering right now, but because I don't have anything to fly currently, I was wandering if the 106 would fly the laser. Iv'e never flown anything over a 30%, so I'm just not sure how much weight the 106 will fly. I'm pretty positive that this Laser was designed around the 3W-120 and from all that I can find about the 120, the 106 seems pretty compariable except for the 120 weighed more. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith

I have had 2 of these over the years.

A 106 will fly it, but not with authority. Both of mine were in the 34 - 38 lb range and used a 140.

If yours is much lighter, it should fly fine. Again, I suspect it will not be the powerhouse so many folks are looking for these days.. I use airspeed management through the manuvers to keep it going.

Have fun !

JIM

Hey keith, Do you know if the guy that kitted this airplane still has any cowlings for it. I used the 38% laser cowl on my previous strickland laser's. Would like to have another cowl for my future 40% laser build thread.

Scott,
Have you checked with Jack Strickland, he told me he has the cowling for the 40% Laser...

The company was Branline Models I think. In Wisconson? . Leo is his name.

He re - designed the model some and updated the kit. But I think he gave it up ? There was a review of it in High Flight a couple of years ago. Much lighter.. and he flew it with, guess what ! A 100 cc engine. Find one of the old High Flights that had the review, his info is in there. He had a much better cowl than Miami Models..

I built one of his kits before the redesign. Still have the instruction book.. like 25 pages long ! No plans.

Scott,

I called the guy that bought the Miami Valley Laser out. He had one kit ready to go, but he had no spare cowl, which is what I was looking for as well for the one I bought to have a spare. I asked him if he still had the plans from the original, and he said no, that he had redesigned it. I can't believe you would buy someone out and not keep the originals. Anyway he said any Extra canopy would work, you just have to cut it to fit. I also emailed Jack as I want to get a set of his plans. He said he has cowls, canopys, and event the aluminum landing gear for it. The guy that bought the Miami Valley rights says he really wants to sell it all and would let it go for $4500 I think, but I told him without the original plans and templates, he would have a hard time ever getting that out of it.

Thanks,

Keith

If he doesn't have the plans or the templates, what exactly is he selling for any money...

Doesn't sound like one would be getting much for $4500.00 Does it. The only reason I want the 38% cowl was I like it a little better than the one Jack Has. It was a two piece cowl and a little easier to work with. I'll just get one of Jack's but thanks for trying.
