So I am curious as to how many Giant Scale flyers out there are using gyros in their models ?
Time to come clean if you do or feel free to use this thread to dob in someone you know who does! |

I tried about 6 years ago and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to hook 'em up or where to position 'em out of pure hover-challenged frustration. Curious as well. I've heard legends of the former TOC boys dreaming up all kinds of witty and amazing concepts when hovering was brand new. Not sure if gyros even work, or are in use, never run across it. But History seems to be made daily in this hobby, and with all the tech that's swirrling around, particularly in 2007, it's an great time to be a modeler.
Rumor has it Wayne has his snap roll switch programmed to hover on command.

The only gyro's I have seen being used in fixed wing models are in a few turbines that fly up my way.
I dont see a gyro being a huge help in an IMAC style aircraft, hows it going to react during spins and snaps etc???? It certainly wouldnt be a great help in a hovering model, you need to be infront of the model with your inputs to make it torque roll. The myth that hovering planes need gyros is exactly that... a myth. I am curious why you think peple need to 'come clean' or be dobbed in. Are you suggesting that gyro's are being used secretively in competition???

Ben, I think this was meant in a humourous way, not a serious allegation.

In that case I admit it..... the only way I manage to fly a straight line in IMAC is because of my 3 axis gyro's and the infrared autopilot horizon!!!

Yeah I heard of some TOC guys using sailing winch servos to move weights back and forwards inside the airframe to change weight for different routines.
Supposedly the gyros can make hovering a hands off affair. I have tried the Yak with Gyro's on realflight and it certainly does. I was curious if any people are actually doing this in reality. Certainly could not see any use for it in IMAC. |

. All kidding aside, isn't it illegal to use a gyro in competition! It would be like cheating. Cause if you can use a gyro, it would save hours of practice! It wouldn't be fair to the guys who put the time in to practice.

I've tried putting one in my AJX just for kicks to see what it will do. For sure it flies "different" especially with heading hold on. Since AJX has such a lo coupling anyway, with the rudder on gyro, you can do a true hands off KE. Just park it in KE, set the right throttle and viola!
. It makes KE loop easier also as all you have to do is focus on the loop radius, not the attitude of the plane.Having said that though, you will have to neutralize the control immediately or else, it will snap. You WILL need to do coordinated turns just like you do in helis, and it makes flying circuit more like flying circuits with helis .I haven't used it since I dorked my AJX doing formation flying with Ben, but it was a cool experiment. Those that say that it won't help in IMAC just don't know how to set it up. If set on all 3 Axis, then the gyro will do all the wind correction. It will even help make your loop rounder and your inverted figures straighter. Having said that though, I fly models that are superbly designed anyway and don't feel the need to get the "help" from a gyro. Just my 2c |

I think IMAC rules require that competing models must function like there full size counterparts ie no gyros, split elevators ect ect.
Iv'e seen one guy try it, the nose stayed nice and vertical but once it torque rolled on him he'd loose it anyway

I had a friend who had one on the Rudder in his WH Extra....it worked, like previously stated, you had to know when to turn it off. And KE was it's only real use.
We called it "one Trick Pony". Excersize your temporal lobes. |

when i was building my heli, i put the gyro on my slow stick... only rudder, it works ok to adjust for the wind, but it liked to counteract my imputs a bit..

Ya caught me. My trex has a 401 too.
I think FMA advertises thier system as having hover capabilities but I've never seen it done. |
