As I recall the Byron event was not an AMA event and as such was not held under the restrictions of the AMA Safety Code. Plus, given that it was 20 years ago I am not even certain that the current weight limits were in place. To be honest I cannot remember when the weight limits came into being.

And to be accurate, the AMA does not insure airplanes. It 's coverage is limited to planes less than 100 pounds and if over 55 pounds certain extra conditions must be met in order for the coverage to be in effect.

And while talking about big models, does everyone recall the giant B-52 that crashed in England? Very impressive as well.

The Staudacher is very cool and I had the opportunity to see it at the TOC. Very cool to see it finally fly!!

I learned last night that the Byron's B-29 is at a "Byrons" museum in Ankeny, Iowa. As I understand, it isn't a well advertised place - sort of a house & shop with a neat collection of the original Byron's aircraft.

There's a really neat museum in McMinville, Oregon that's sort of like this. Noel Martin has probably 300 antique radios, 1000 motors, and a incredible collection of planes & helicopters. It's in the business area of "machine sheds" and if someone doesn't tell you where it is, you will never see it. Your neck will hurt if you do... from looking up at all the neat things!

Judge, the Buff was 27ft, and the second one died on its maiden IIRC, although they tried to sweep it under the carpet before it got public
