As the voting gets closer to a close, I wanted to provide you an easy read on what the two leading charities in our poll have as their mission statements. I encourage you to take a read and see which seems like the best suited charity to receive the Giants donation after the Tucson Shootout.
In no particular order: Children of Fallen Soldiers (A US Charity): http://www.cfsrf.org/ The Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund was founded, October 23, 2003 to help support surviving U.S. Military children who have lost a parent in the Afghanistan or Iraq wars by providing them with College Grants. Our College Grant Program has been expanded to include both U.S. Military children and spouses who have either lost a loved one as a result of the Afghanistan or Iraq wars or have a severely disabled parent or spouse who was injured during a deployment to either war. Our second objective is to help the surviving members of these families with financial assistance. Our goal is to make awards to applicants in need, some whose funds were raised in their particular State that have children under the age of 18, and who are in need of assistance with housing, repairs, utilities, medical expenses, groceries, clothing, school supplies and other expenses deemed necessary in order to help alleviate their need. There is no substitute for a parent, but we strive to ease their pain and suffering and honor the memories of our fallen soldiers. Make-A-Wish Foundation of America http://www.wish.org/ Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation's mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities. The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Greicius realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Since its humble beginnings, the organization has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, reaching more than 144,000 children around the world. Although it has become one of the world's most well-known charities, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has maintained the grassroots fulfillment of its mission. A network of more than 25,000 volunteers enable the Make-A-Wish Foundation to serve children with life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers serve as wish granters, fundraisers, special events assistants and in numerous other capacities. As the Foundation continues to mature, its mission will remain steadfast. Wish children of the past, present and future will have an opportunity to share the power of a wish®. |

Running into a brick wall with Paypal. In order to not charge fees, we have to be a bonefide non-profit or charitable organization. Otherwise it's the 3% rule. I'm not even sure I can get a second Paypal account. I will check with a local bank tomorrow to see how it works.

Everybody wants a cut. I'm sure the bank account will take a chunk too. Just depends on the size of the chunk.

Spoke to Max today and we came up with a good plan for mail in donations. All we will do is, when we decide on a charity is have those members who want to donate, send me a check MADE OUT TO THE CHARITY. I'll keep a spreadsheet of who sent in what and have it available to anyone who asks. I also may post the names (not amounts) as they come in. When the Shootout money is added, I'll send all the checks in at once, registered mail, with a list of donors and letter on behalf of the FG members. I'll check on getting P.O. Box to receive checks.

I am so sorry that I just now ran into this thread...I'll be sending a donation, but I don't think I'll make the TAS as originally planned, funds just aren't available.
Let us know about the PayPal donation system, even with the 3% loss, it's better than missing the donations all together. |

I think for simplicity, I'll skip the whole Paypal thing. One could send an eCheck from their Paypal account I believe. Money orders and bank checks would work too. As long as they have your name on them.
Paypal would be convenient, but we're talking about having to set up a bank account to receive funds and that means $$$ as well. This way ALL of it goes to the charity. I called the UPS Store near my house and I can get a P.O. Box for $15.00 a month. I can afford that. Plus it gives me a "secret" place to receive those strange hobby company packages that raise the wife's eyebrow (just kiddin'). Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm open to them. |

Personally, I don't have a problem with sending a check, but paypal would help take out the "what if he runs with the money" thoughts......

I will keep checking the Paypal angle, but I have a feeling they will want me to set up a bank account. Maybe that's not too expensive. I'll call now. Dave |
