Ok guys, if the wife leaves me I'm blaming all of you
. After spending too much time here in the land of the Flying Giants, I have come to realize that I need a gasser. She'll be my one and only plane, and I have to be able to load, transport in the back of a short box with toneau cover, and run it, all by my lonesome. My budget is tight, very tight, so we're talking 50cc here, NO bigger. After I sell all my glow stuff (F90, Twist, YS 110, YS 63s and all glow related acc.) and drain my bank account, I will be purchasing a DA50, proper servos, lipo's, regulators, and so on. I need your help in deciding what plane to put all this expensive stuff into. I was looking at the H9 Extra 260 27% simply because I can get it through my lhs, and the price is perfect. But, I was reading somehwere that it doesn't fly very well?!?! If you kind gentlemen would please point me in the right direction, and help me make an informed and educated decision, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Shawn |

I think a H9 260 isn't enough plane for a DA-50, even though it has been done.
I'd start by looking here. www.chiefaircraft.com sells a few planes and carries good equipment, but for all your Giant scale needs I would check out. www.troybuiltmodels.com the BME Edge VIII is stable in harrier/hovers it's light... and comes with a TON of Carbon Fibre goodies. www.bmeaircraft.com AM's Yak is also a solid plane. www.toc1.com also the quique soemzini yak if you can get an extreme flight Yak that would be great too..... www.extremeflightrc.com and if the 30% Panz'l ever comes out... www.jtecrc.com that should get you started ![]() -Taylor-

The H9 260 is plenty of plane for a DA50. One at my local field, it simply floats around the sky!!!

Ben.. I've had one of these and in my opinion it's not enough planen for the engine. Higher wingloading.. etc. This being a first gasser he might not want to have a plane with that excessive amout of power. Just my opinion though, CG |

For someone on a budget its a great aircraft, the one being flown at my club flys as light as my Comp Arf yak, lands at crawling speed and does the best elevators and harriers I have seen, no wing rocking at all!!!
The next size up is a 2.3 class extra which is a little too heavy for the DA 50 unless you pipe it. |

The TOC Yak and CompArf 2.3 are a bit heavy for a 50cc IMO. The H9 Extra would be my choice, and the ability to get it through you LHS is even better. |

Typical, true 50cc class planes will have a low 1300-mid 1400 square inch wing area. For a first Gasser, you don't want so much power-to-weight that it can get you in trouble, or so much wingloading, since it will fly faster and will fall out of the sky faster if the engine quits.
For your first gasser, get something bigger and in the 15-17 pound range. The QQ or maybe even AM Yak is probably an ideal first plane.

I totally agree, get an 85-87 inch ARF like the ones Cajun listed. I have the BME Edge II and it's way easier to land than the trainer I started out on. It just floats for ever on approach. The big wing area is what you want with a DA50 (and at or under 17 pounds). The TOC, QQ, and BME are my favorites. Prepare to plop down at least $2000 for a well setup 50cc gas powered plane.

IMO I would stay away from the Great Planes Patty... I have heard lots of horror stories with that plane. Get a nice
16-19 lb. / 1300-1400 sq in / 85-87" bird and you'll like it.

Those are 1.60 size airplanes and are heavy for their size. Power-to-weight is only as important as wingloading, and is definitely not the most important. Why have rediculous P2W on a smaller plane with 32 ounces of wingloading when you can have good P2W (power out of a hover no problem) and a 24-26 ounce loading?
I don't get it...but maybe it's just me. There were 3 Wagstaffs at the flying field today, and not a single one of them flew light. You could see it in their recovery from a down line and in how much speed thay need to carry on landings...if anything, they fly scale, but they definitely don't fly with the grace, response, or controllability of a plane with 2-300 more squares, a larger wingspan, and the same or less weight. Not a single one of the Wagstaffs at our field were under 15 pounds - some were over 17.

Thanks for the input guys, it looks like the BME Edge 540 vIII is the way to go for me. I like the all wood construction (not a fan of covered foam) and the parts that come with the plane. There were plenty of yaks, but I don't like the round cowl design very much. If I start now I should have it all together and ready for a maiden by early june. I'll be sure to post pics and vids.
Thanks again. |

I've got a BME Edge V3 in the mail - can't wait for it to show up! The downside is the BME 55cc motor got me going, but it sounds like I have to wait till late April for it to ship. That wait is the one that's going to kill me!!!
