Well.......after flying foamies on one and getting a rash of glitches I don't think its in my future. To be fair it was with limited range light RX's but it was also under 300'. I have concluded if I want to do the short antenna thing it will be 2.4 GHZ. The baseloaded antenna Hobby Lobby sells wasn't any better.

It's strange because after reading all the threads on RCU I came to the conclusion that they work just fine. Tony Stillman even endorses them (the Smiley one).

But I never did find anyone using them on Giant Scale.

I had one a while back, and did a test with it. I set a heli with a Futaba 149DP in the middle of my driveway, and had my wife watch it awhile I walked away down the street (talking to her on the cell phone) with my 9c in servo test mode where it constantly cycles the servos. I got about a quarter of a mile away and it went into failsafe. I stopped, and swapped the antenna for the stock 9c antenna, and it came back to life, and I kept walking. After a while I was 2 miles away and tired, and it still hadn't failsafed, so I had her get in the car and come pick me up. When I got home I threw the antenna away, not worth the range reduction.

I still can't figure out why some people have problems and others don't have any. It doesn't make sense to me. Could it possibly be an installation issue?

Was yours a Smiley?

Yup, it was a Smiley. Realistically, 1/4 mile of ground range is plenty in the air, but I couldn't bring myself to use it after seeing the reduction in range.
