Ready for this??
Is it a Hobby, an Addiction, or a lifestyle?! How about ITS OKAY?

Hey - Bottom line: Christians-bless their hearts, they do love to eat their own.
That is how I would sum it up.
(I am a Christian too BTW, so I believe I can speak from the outskirts of "their" camp.

Please ask this relative how RC could be made USEFUL then? Hold your tongue, and give em a fair chance to dump it all out for you to examine. Then - maybe, you will be better able to deal with the real objection(s) and misunderstandings. Surely there is some way for this wholesome activity that supports so much non-vice industry, and keeps so many teenagers diverted from drugs - and out of stolen cars should be allowed to persist in this person's estimation?

Right now you are guilty of shifting from one really dangerous waste of time (motorcross) for an apparently boring waste of time? Doesn't that sound like progress to you? Does me. You risk NO chance of becoming a paraplegic building and flying RC.

As far as spending the the big bucks, well hell. The big demands on you at work apparently require big demands to achieve the needed stress relief. That 'medicine' so happens to come from big aircraft flying every-which-where but straight and level! ( Humm now that, is kinda weird man) .

Maybe if you didn't have the demanding job (with the empowering bigger $$ rewards) you would be out of sync spending so much $$ & time to it. Maybe borderline selfish in some people's opinion. I say dude- it that is what it takes to bring you back to center - then "OUTOFMYWAYMAN!!"

I see this hobby as a VERY Positive force in the community. Promotes camaraderie with other REAL human beings, promotes a clean lifestyle as flying drunk would never be allowed to happen, and good sportsmanship - just to get started. I could go on but you know all the good this hobby brings to everyones' life it touches. Maybe more time focusing on those type attributes will make for a better winning of that soul which so persecutes you today?
Constantly learning new technologies, perfecting your abilities and keeping the wife in smiles to boot. Sounds like a good life to me, and we all deserve to make THAT choice for ourselves.

I live it and breath it. I may put it aside for awhile but I always come back to it. My wife does not understand it, but I don't understand Opray either, but she still supports me and never complains even when I spend way to much time and money on it.

For me is everything, I get up and the first thing I see and think is my extra 260, that´s in my room, I go to school (industrial design) thinking on what stuff can I do relaed with airplanes to use on a school project or what of my projects I can use for airplanes, for example this week I hope to start making CF landing gear, pants, servo trays and more pieces. I love my career too is very related, but man airplanes are just great. People say to me that I am way too in to airplanes and they are right, I would rather be in home friday night building than spending money on drinks (money I can use on servos!!!) If you ask me this is a great hobby that soon turns in to an addiction making a new lifestyle for you my friend!!!!

Now I have one our family friends criticising my obsession with big boy toys. Yes, It does take a lot of time and money but I get so much more out of it.
Heck, I understand you completly. My family never understood what I got out of doing this hobby at all.
This is the only hobby I have done for the last 30+ years, and would not change a thing. What I have learned, shared and the friends that I have met have been all worth it. This hobby is a way that I get away from thinking about things that I can't do a thing about.
The one thing I do hate about the hobby is that time flies when I am at the field or building a new model. I just can't wait for the next event or to meet a new friend. All you guys that I have met on FG have been the greatest.
I think that it is about time that you starting spending less time trying to explain to your friend what you get out of the hobby and get out and enjoy yourself some more. You will never get it through to someone like that. Especially if they are not open minded to maybe spend a day at the field with you to see why you enjoy this passion for modeling.

This hobby is an addiction. No question about it.

It worst then most others.
I can spend a week flying and hanging out at Joe Nall, get home and after one night of good sleep, all I can think about is Planes. Some nights, I feel guilty going to bed if I know I don't have something done on my planes that I had planned on doing. I even gave away all my video game systems this past year, because I felt guilty playing thenm, instead of practicing on the sim.

My wife has no interest in planes or RC at all, and this makes my passion for this stuff hard to pallet for her. She is usually annoyed with me and I have to be very careful on how I present plans for trips to her. Or how I sneak a 40% into the house.

Its hard sometimes.. and it causes more arguments than anything else in my life.
BUT you know what... its RC or the highway for me...!! I will not give it up!

Um yea... RC is an addiction... A BAD ONE!

When I was heavy into pattern competition, my first wife did not share my passion at all. I did eventually get divorced from her for other issues, but she did realize that I could of been into alot of other things that were worse! I think that every man needs a form of mental departure from the every day ho-hum of lviing and surviving.

Its all about having a passion . Life is hard enough and if you have only one thing
to think about you will surely screw yourself into an early grave. Even as a kid my
parents would never let me be idle on weekends . It didnt matter what I was into
it was always full on and do it as well as you can .

9 years BMX
7 years Mountain bikes and road bikes
8 years go kart
6 years RC planes

People who knock you for doing a hobby need to get a life and have some FUN .
Weather its just going to my local field with my mates or looking at IMAC patterns
until my eyes bleed its all a big bag of good times .

Love what you do and love life .

My hobbies:

http://www.toprudder.com/hobbies/index.html

When I was getting started in the hobby as a young teenager, all my Dad ever told me was that model airplanes were a waste of time and money. But I enjoyed it. Made a lot of life-long friends. Through the years I won a lot of trophies in competiton fun-flys and pattern. It is kind of sad that my Dad never came to a single contest in which I flew.

Around '97 or so, I dropped out of the hobby for a few years. Two years ago, my son became interested in flying, so I got back into the hobby as a result. What a great two years this has been. We are as close as ever and it is so great to have a common interest. I don't even fly that much, I just enjoy watching/helping my son. We hang out with the best group of guys you can possibly imagine, the group known as the RDRC Traveling Circus. By the end of this year, my son and I will have attended 26 modeling events. Wow!!!

I think back to the time I was growing up. Model airplanes gave me something CONSTRUCTIVE to do and I am sure it kept me out of trouble. I built a few electronic projects from kits, including an Ace Silver Seven radio, and as a direct result I got my start in electronics. I am always thinking of ways to solve problems or to improve things so it stimulates my mind. I have an activity now that I can share with my son. He is involved with an activity that includes aerodynamics, electronics, REAL physics (not someones idea of a computer simulation), mechanics, and gives him a reason to get out of the house.

If other people can't understand that, I simply don't know how else to explain it.

D) None of the above

Girl I was dating didn't go away when I bought planes instead of crap for her, she is the wife now, Lauri.

House was picked for airplane use. Type of garage, parking for trailer, etc. In fact, we are moving soon and the new house has to be more airplane friendly. Right now the garage, the trailer and one room full of airplane, heli, r/c car (on and off road), slot cars, r/c boats, hovercraft, kites. You can not go to any place in the house without seeing some r/c related something.

The 15 foot trailer to haul planes.

The big ass van to haul planes and pull the trailer, however it also is a bitchin beach van.

Vacations are planned around flying events. Many of you have met my family at these events.

Changed jobs to get more time off to go fly events. Job sometimes sends me to places where events are being held

Son flys.

Mom and Dad opened a hobby shop 30 years ago and now my wife runs it.

This stuff is my life.
