Great Thread!
My view: its basically a bit of everything! Its addicting due to the amount of new and amazing planes coming out and will be coming out, theres always going to be a plane that you will want to buy or even fly at that!!!
It is a hobby just like everything else that you would like! It is a really good hobby to be involved in due to the scale of it all over the world, and its growing bigger and bigger each and every day!
Most people here use Rc Flying as a lifestyle I guess! Even aviation is a lifestyle such as aerobatic pilots Eg..Matt Chapman!! lol This is why the website is up and running like it is! Its a big part in some peoples lives!! All in all its cool and why there are loads of websites dedicated to Rc!! FlyingGiants!!!

This hobby has become my lifestyle, with my kids grown and out of the house and my wife working in real estate my weekends have only fueled my addiction. With good health and good friendships I can only hope to continue for many years to come!

I had my first "bad" day of the season yesterday when my engine stalled doing rolling harriers about 15 feet up with zilch airspeed. So much for the fuselage of my first gasser. It's times like this that I question just what the hell I'm doing with my money and time myself.

Perhaps this is normal during a time of mourning...?

It's funny you should mention that. I have an EF 88 Yellow and Black Yak in the closet. I plan to get started on it shortly!

Man your going down a bad road. This stuff is worse than any drug. I've been an addict for over twentyfive years can't get it out of my system. First you start out as a kid flying control line with Cox .049's Then the next thing you know your out trying to score a 30% Yak with a DA 50. Honestly this is one of the best hobbies you could ever get involved with. You meet some of the nicest people flying R/C. You can take you kid's and hope they get addicted too. Not to many drunks and drug pushers at the flying field. You think it's expensive? Go buy a bass boat, golf clubs, horses,a Harley. Any hobby costs money. If you love what your doing and your family isn't wanting for anything what the heck. I've been a airplane nut since I can remember. My granddad got me started when I was 12. I've been in and out over the years but I always have something to come back to. I'm back now hopefully for good. Great thread!

For me, I guess its a lifestyle. I've been involved in model aviation since the early 60's, started out building and flying control line. It's been a great hobby for me, and has been a very positive force in my life. The comradery in this hobby is simply fantastic, no matter where you go. The greatest thing for me though, is teaching someone to fly. Nothing greater than seeing that 1st solo flight.

to all,
this was a great thread to read. Basically everything that has been said already is what i feel about the hobby. I have been into this gig for 30+ years since i was a kid. All through school, all I could think about was airplanes. My first marriage went south for multiple reasons but one sure thing was that she did not support my hobby. My current wife surely does as do my three kids. I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't have the support of his/her other partner in life. My wife doesn't want to fly airplanes but really enjoys going to the field to watch me fly and see others enjoying what i enjoy so much. She is proud of what I do, what I can do with my planes, and how much I can help others when we are at the field. I only wish I had more cash to spend on the hobby. the attached picture is the perfect example of what i am talking about. this was taken 4 years ago but the feeling is the same, it is family oriented.

I have always told others that this hobby sure beats drinking in bars, which unfortunately is thought of by too many to be the cool thing to do. Now I certainly enjoy getting a night out with my wife without the kids so we can go to an adult place and hang with other adults. But if i were forced to make a choice on which to quit for good, going to a bar would be history.

for those that crash, the only cure is to get back in, fix it or build another. Any time i had a crash, it was an excuse to go get another plane and build it better than the last one. That is a powerful motivation everyone can use to their advantage. There is always a better plane to build. A different plane that works better in some manuevers than others. You cannot possibly exhaust all of the different choices out there, especially now. That is what i believe keeps many of us so hooked on the hobby, the drive to find a better plane, heli, car, whatever. To fly better than your friends and peers. It is the same drive used in other hobbies, be it golf, or car restoration or whatever. We here just have a passion for planes. And if someday you loose the passion for another sport, don't sweat it, just be happy with that new endeavor.

again, great thread everyone. i will use this to get working on my new plane instead of wishing it would finish itself. i am using a trip to the Joe Nall as my motivation to finish. Can't go there without something to fly.
