It should rip the rudder off of a 33% model

[quote=drbyrnes;340367]I am new to this site, and new to giant RC planes. This winter I hope to start with building a Lanier Yak 54 (87",16-17 lbs.,50-80 cc. gas), and then hopefully a Hangar 9, 35% Extra 260 (105",27-30 lbs., 100-116 cc. gas). However I am having difficulty deciding on servos for these projects. There are so many out there, prices vary, brands vary, analogue vs. digital, etc. Can anyone give me some guidance on servos for big planes? The Yak requires a minimum 100 oz/in torque servo, and the Extra requires at least 180 oz./in. I know digitals with metal gears, high torque, and high speed are best. Which servos fit these specs, but give the best bang for the buck? Can I get away with analogues? (I'm not into competition.) I'd also like to narrow it down to either JR, Futaba, or Hi Tec brands. Some of the ones I've looked at are the Hi Tec 5955, and the JR 8611 or 8711. Thanks for your input.

In my opinion the Hitec 5955 is far and away the best bang for the buck. See my test site www.servotestsite.com for my reasons.

According to hitec the 5955 puts out 333.29 oz-in on 6 volts, but tbm who sells them (why would they put them down on rating?) rates them at 152 torque oz when using them for over 60 seconds of intermittent use.. If you could count on the rating from hitec a hitec 5945 would be plenty at 181 tq oz but..... So, if you need a servo that actually puts out 180 oz (just barely) you'd better get at least the 5955 if not 2

Bill from tbm also says that the testing that hitec does is different so it is a different kind of tourque. He says that hitec tests for holding torque and not moving torque. He was testing how much the servos can lift not hold in place from there center.

This is what he was emulating...

"I operated the servo as if I was performing knife edge passes along the flightline and knife edge loops, so the servo was cycled on an off and was stalled for no more than 8 seconds at a time."

" I regret to report that the Hitec HS-5955 lost 40% of its torque by dropping from 248 oz-in to just 152 oz-in in about 60 seconds (of intermittent use). To define intermittent use: I did not simply stall the servo for 60 seconds to see what would happen. I operated the servo as if I was performing knife edge passes along the flightline and knife edge loops, so the servo was cycled on an off and was stalled for no more than 8 seconds at a time."

So, if being able to knife edge is something that you'd like to do.... Better buy 2

OK. Thanks for the input guys. So what's the consensus: use 2 Hitec 5995's on each aileron, 1 on each elevator, and 2 or more on rudder????

To get down to earth: what servos, and how many, would you guys recommend for the control surfaces of the Hangar 9 Extra 260 35%??

Thanks.

If you want to go 5955, then 2 for each aileron, 1 for each elevator half and 2 on the rudder... According to the specs for the rudder, 1 8711 (at 280 oz) or 2 5955 should do...

From the manual...
For rudder:
When using a servo with less than
300 oz/in of torque, it is highly recommended
to use two rudder servos and link them
together using a JR MatchBox. An additional
servo location on the opposite side of the
fuselage will require the removal of the
covering to install your second servo.

In general:
• JR 8611A or 8711 Metal Geared high torque servos (7) or equivalent

Looking at this thread
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...-added-12.html

A couple of people went with 1 8711 on the rudder. It will help a little $ wise as the 87 is $114 and the 59 is $89/piece so that would be $180...

Or at least a 7950 on an unregulated 2 cell lipo (7.4)
