Well look what FlyingGiants Staff member Tony "Woodisgood" Russo came up with! Mr. Mark Earl Cheeseburger Beavis Leseberg will be flying one of the most bad-ass Russo built planes to date. Tony tells us all about it, read on:
Just finished up Marks new Extra 300.After last years mishap ( see my avatar ) I knew that I had to make another airframe for the DA 200. Talking with Mark I decided to use the current Extra 300 airframe but with some mods. This plane will be for sequences only. The fuselage is streched 4.75" from the te of the wing back.I also moved the engine 3.25" forward to help balance the airframe and still be able to keep the rudder servos in the tail. A new cowling mold had to be made as well as new fuselage formers. Mark also wanted the plane alittle heavier so I new I would be able to try some different finishing options on this plane. I decided to glass the turtledeck and rudder with 3/4oz glass cloth so that it could be painted to match the front of the plane.I kept track of how much weight was being added and its right at 1 lb for the turtledeck and rudder. Not sure if this would be an option for 150 cc powered airframes because of the weight difference in the engines. I also installed a servo in the Composite Creations pilot so that the head will turn with the rudder. The specs on the airframe are Wingspan 123" Engine DA 200 Weight 41.2 lbs dry Radio JR 9303 2.4 Servos are 3 8711 on each aileron 1 8711 on each elevator and 2 on the rudder running through a Duralite powerbox. Kits will be available after I return from the TAS.Hope to see you all there. Last edited by WOODisGOOD; 09-09-2007 at 11:10 PM. |

Thanks for the compliments but I cant take credit for the airbrushing. I am learning but my buddy Clint Sweet did most of the paint work on this plane and I couldnt have done this without him. He paints custom motorcycles for a living and im lucky that he is able to help me out on some of these projects. The turtledeck and rudder were fiberglassed in 3/4oz cloth and then painted and clearcoted. After that I ran the Ultracote just over the paint line. I have to say this is probably the best plane that I have done to date. Glassing the turtledeck was something I have wanted to do for awhile but could because of CG issues. On this plane because of the DA 200 I was able to get away with it. I think it still a tade nose heavy but I will let Mark do the final adjustments when he flies it. I also mounted a servo in the pilot head so it will turn with the rudder.
