Folding Tail Hook - Simple and Solid

I called the shop at Metal Masters this morning and had a great chat. Metal Masters is a metal fabrication shop and the owner is also an RC pilot. That means great designs for folks like us. Here is some info on the Metal Masters Folding Tail Hook:

About Metal Masters

I started making these things because I needed it as a RC pilot. I have 12 and 16 inch tall versions. The 16 inch unit uses a 5/8 rod and can hold up to a 120 CC plane no problem.

I'm still getting organized and have a new building for creating these RC products. I'll have the trailer and my products with me at Joe Nall this year so come see me!

About the Tail Hook

You make it go up and down manually. Stick it in the ground and it locks into place, then you can back the plane up and fold it down. I try to make them simple and solid.

Info

  • 1/2" solid aluminum round rod
  • 16" wide and 16" tall
  • 1'8" aluminum frame
  • 12" long ground spike rubber tips on ends
  • Pool noodle foam included

Check out all the Metal Master products here.

I have the larger version and it works great on my DA120 powered 35% Extra. Use it when nobody is available to help me start. I've even tried to pull it out at full throttle, it holds just fine.

I used one of these at a flying event. I thought I liked it until I backed my plane up and the prop blast blew it back and the end that are bent at a 90 dented in my covering. My suggestion would be to leave them straight or not bent so much. Otherwise, I would like to have one!

I love my products from MJ. The tail hook is great! Got one for my dad who flys a lot during the week when no one is around to help. We've had great luck with ours! All of MJ's other stuff is pretty cool too. I've got some wheel chocks, fueling cans and his Airplane hangers, all work great and look very nice! It's all very reasonably priced too. Can't wait to see what he comes out with next!

Agree, love mine but if they were straight and a tad longer this would work with more planes. Love mine though, use it quite a bit when I'm not at an event.

Love all the feed back guy's.. We made the 1.5" top 90 degree bend back as a safety catch just in case your elevator is all ready close to the top. It will act as a catch even if it lend forward for some reason like loose soil...If your willing to wait a week or two I'm willing to give you prices on custom sizes and shapes to your specs....

I bought the bigger one for my 120 cc size and it is great, shipped fast and very heavy duty! You need a 3-4 pound hammer to pound it in if the ground is hard.

Instead of the 90 on top, maybe the entire upright should stop short of 90. Then the entire upright would act as a safety and would fall down easily when backing up the plane.

This is an awesome product! Very well made and works excellent! I have now worries when starting my plane.I use one on my 70cc extra and on my 120cc plane! Few of the guys at my local flying field bought one soon after they saw mine. If you don't have one, you definitely need one!

if you don't like the bends at the top, how about you cut them off yourselves?
I am sure it would save the metal fabricators time so he doesn't have to bend the tubes/rod.
I know I would not have any issues with that.

How about make them straight! I won't buy one with the bends. It will do damage to you horizontal stabs. Cutting off will make them shorter and they could be longer already.

AGREE. Barely fits a 35% plane as it is.
