Default Slowest carden build in the south - from the bones to the sky!

I just got back from Nashville and now am the proud owner of a carden 40% extra 260 in the bones. She has mild lightening performed and is set up for cans. Left for me to complete is to check the beveling and make sure that she is 3D rate capable, bevel the rudder, add some of the servo pockets, finish sand and fill a few dings, and then it's time for the covering and paint...

I've got some new and interesting ideas on how to finish this bird out, so stay tuned for updates, but don't get too eager, I've got a lot of other projects that I am in the middle of, and I am a full time student, so this is going to be an all-winter project, maybe even extending into spring

Pics coming soon!

You're almost making sound like a glass and paint project? Am I on point with that guess?

The hatch will be glassed and painted, the rest will be ultrakote.

Well the project has taken a step forward... the plane is out of the trailer and up to the loft! On the down-side however, my camera died so I can't take any pictures till the new 30D shows up

That should be any day, so stay tuned for some pics.

I've had a chance to take a closer look at what the last guy did with the plane so far and everything is look good, but there are a few negatives that I'm going to have to corrcet:

+'s
- Very well done lightening work. Nothing too extreme, but not underdone either.
- Build appears to be pretty nice - I was a little worried since the guy described it as a non-professional build helped by professionals.
-'s
- When you flex the surfaces to where the bevels touch, the entire bevel doesn't come together. The bevels will have to be adjusted for perfect match when the surfaces are a max deflection
- There are a few gouges on the trailing edge of the wing that are going to need some balsa glued in and sanded to shape.
- The leading edge of the wings on the tips is extremely sharp tapering to a blunt leading edge at the root... I'm not sure if this is stock or just the way the builder did it, but I'm going to check that out.

For now I haven't started on anything and wont till I'm back from the DOD fly-in in Houston this weekend. I'm too busy getting "big ugly purple" - my 40% carden cap up to shape for that event.

Back from the DOD event, I'm now getting started. Still no pictures, but hardware decisions have been made:

Power will be supplied by my DA150 on cans. It may go in for a rebuild before installation, we'll see.
Servos will be Hitec 5955TG's on everything but rudder which will be handled by a seiko.
Batteries will be either 2x 2600mah TBM li-ions, or 2X 5200 TMB li-ions on recievers, one 2600mah TBM li-ion on ignition. Duralite 3s li-ion on the seiko.
Recievers will either be JR 770's if I use my 10X on 72mhz, or I may use the new spektrum DX7 that I won at the DOD event this last weekend. I'll be testing the DX7 on my smaller planes for a while before I commit to using it in my 40% stuff.
Spinner will be a BB fiberglass 5" from esprit models.
Wheels will be TBM 4.5". Tailwheel will be an RC blimp titanium unit. Axles will probably remain du-bro standards.
Hardware is going to be top of the line with as much aluminum as possible. I've already changed the hatch hold-down screws to anodized aluminum with countersunk washers. These same screws will be used wherever possible including wheel pant screws, cowl screws, and any interior screws that I install. I'm talking with sensei about how he lightened his carden 260 and will be sourcing the 10-32 aluminum studs for the control horns from the same place he did.

I've got a camera again, so I'll have some pictures up soon.

I'm surprised that on one has used on me yet. Now you don't get the chance.

Here's some pics of the big carden in the bones. Sorry for the crappy angles, my work area is SMALL.

Well a little update - after realizing that while my skills certainly were up to the task of building this beast, they weren't up to finishing it out to the level that I demand of my aircraft. With this in mind I handed the extra over to my friend Jack along with my well traveled 40% carden cap airframe for payment to finish. Now things should get moving!

I also scored a sweet deal on a ZDZ 160 with both standard mufflers and cans. Since the extra is already prepped for cans, that is the route I will be going on it. This engine was enough power to 3D a 47lb TOC yak, so I can't wait to see what it does on a well lightened carden!

I'll post more as I get some more pictures of the build in progress, but I expect nothing but the best from Jack. I purchased my 40% sukhoi that is in my avitar from him and that is one fine aircraft!
