Sure i fly 3D 90% of the time, but somehow i still want a Hangar 9 1/4 scale J3 Cub more than anything...
or maybe a nice 100cc size Super Decathlon? Or even better, a 1/3 scale L19 BIRD DOG!!! i'm off to go dream some more...

Sure, why don't we just destroy the FG server and go back to magazines! I'm kidding!
Scale birds are great... I'd get a 95in mustang for sure as long as it had retracts, flaps and a smoke system...something to toss a 80-110cc in. H9 should come out with a version of their P-51 Mustang, Spitfire, F4U Corsair, F6F Hellcat, P-40 Warhawk, P-47D Thunderbolt, and Sopwith in this size. I think with the developments we are seeing in giant scale aerobatic planes, the large scale stuff would be built to a whole new level and would be awesome ... and light! Who's in? I'l love to see a couple huge birds ripping down the flight line. The thing I think most people like about IMAC/3D is the challenge it provides and development in terms of flying skills. Scale is the other more relaxed side in terms of flying and is great but I definately couldn't do it all the time.

Yeah I would like to own a 35% Mustang. That would be sick! Shaun man, as you know I would still love to get( but never seem to find the funds)a Piper cub on floats. I would Love a Citabria, Cessna 182 on floats, super decathlon, Pitts special, Pitts challenger,Cristaneagle. All giant scale. Those along with a few others would be awsome for the occasional fly. The money to front all of those would be too much and would otherwise be taken away from what I love most in rc; Giant scale aerobatics.
It's kind of like cars. There are so many beautiful ones out there. Hell we can bring up the whole love of women too. Sorry guys , but with the cost of just one, well ,you'd better pick wisely and absorb all your time and money into the one you love most.( at least you can still have pictures of the other ones. )Thats planes of course.

I am new here and not looking to start trouble but, how did hovering ever get to be part of 3D for airplanes? Also, does it add enough value to warrant the redesign to the aircraft needed to support it? Like bigger engines, stronger firewalls and larger control surfaces.

That's "MISTER" idiot to you!
![]() |
![]() And besides, it's fun! The bigger engines, redesigns, etc aren't made only for hovering but for all facets of 3D flight. Hovering is only a small part of it... hang around and you'll see. Us RC guys are the innovators in aerobatics, if we come up with something new, we'll develop it until it's perfect. Then the full-scale guys take notice

I vote fly what you like and I like anything that will fly. I have an AW's Yak that will be my next project, but I also have a Balsa USA Tri-plane being built for me. Next year I want to get one of QQ or AW's biplanes. I saw the new Robart P-47 at KY Jets. I believe it or Skysharks P-40 might be in my future. I also want to get a 40% aerobat at some point. So many planes, so much fun, so little time!!! About the only thing that I don't care for is electrics. I know they fly great but I like the sound of an engine.

i fly my edge a lot, but use a 1 3rd scale.pawnee for aero towing. electric gliders for comps.thermal gliders of the winch. scale gliders are aero towed. big "super slicker" and a "southerner" for the vintage events. full size kitfox on good days. the best days are for fishing. no time for a job or to get bored flying the same plane. alex

You can't really call it general aviation. Like anything else technology evolves. I am sure that the Wright Brothers was considered on the cutting edge of general aviation. WWI Biplanes were cutting edge for General Aviation. Mono planes got bigger faster and high-tech in General Aviation. In fact General Aviaiton owes its roots to model aviaiton. 3D aircraft, it not a sickness but a natural progress of Technology, Aviation Design, and the piloting skills of those who part-take in this wonderful hobby. I know I get a lot of flack from the warbird and circle fliers. But of course they give me flack becasue they know it takes a higher skill level to be able to torgue roll a giant scale aircraft down in the middle of the runway and have total control over it. Now with the advent of 3D Jets, it opens another chapter in General Aviation. Before you know it we will have the technology to do full scale 3D aerobatics with airframes and engines matching out beloved giant scale models. We already have full scale 3D jets in "General Aviation"!
3D extreme aerobatics is just the natural progression in General Aviation. Can you imaging what the future holds for General Aviation? "FLY LOW & SLOW & IN CONTROL!"

well......even though i haven't been flying all that long ( about 1-1/2 years) i'm interested in all aspects of flight. I think the 3D is definetly what i enjoy mostly , but i am into other kinds of flight as well.
I'm wanting to build a 97" wingspan Gee Bee Y. It's not a 3D bird at all , but supposed to be a great flyer. I also have a little cermark alleycat that's getting a Jett 90LX installed on it....should be a quick little plane. That's definetly not a 3D plane. And if i can get into the heli's ( can't afford it right now ) , but want to learn those as well. I do have a 34% columbo anderson Pitts stinker as well. I don't know what kind of 3D it's capable of , or what i'm capable of doing with it , but it'll be a realy fun plane to fly as well. so besides just 3D.......yeah i'm into just the "flying aspect" of the whole hobby. |

I agree that 3D has opened the door to cure some boredome. Loops, rolls, go fast turn sharp, all that gets old after 15 years of flying. Giant scale 3D machines is the sole reason I started flying again. Now several companies off high quality ARF's of all kinds. Civilian aircraft of all erras, warbirds from the beggining to current day. You name it, it's out there. I want several different birds but I put all my eggs(paychecks) into one basket. Sure I'd love to have a KMP P-38, a Century Jets bigass Corsair, and would love a gigantic scaled out Cub. My problem is my want list is bigger than my income. Eventually(pending my Yak doesn't go splat) I will start building my collection back up. I just came back into the hobby after a seven year break and all my toys are gone. There are plenty of "general aviation" enthusiasts left, it's just that the 3D scene is so affordable that us with few funds can just now fork over the dough to get into it.It's too much fun to not get involved. I have to say that it has refined and honed my flying skills ten fold. Now when I jump on the sticks of a screaming Mustang or a slow poking Cub, I can truly fly the s
t out of it and make it look so smooth. Straightline low passes without the purposing, true verticals into a hammerhead without the tail wagging, etc. 3D taking away from general aviation??? I think it has done nothing but improve it all the way around!

I may need a therapist for massaging this one.
![]() I'm actually thinking this Autogyro thingy is a pretty cool craft! Not only is my Pathfinder unable to handle two 50cc craft reasonably, I think this actually is a pretty damn cool "general" aviation creation. (or is it to be considered a WARBIRD? YiKeS!) Think about it- a rotary wing thing is so out of the box thinking!! ![]() I dig the diversity it adds to the flight line, I only wish a 50cc version was easier to come by rather than me scratch build it! Appears to fly rather docile at that too. Post office experimented delivering duh US mail to the tops of buildings with this contraption! Adrian- thanks for getting back on yo' game! That avatar really captures a sweet Xmas sprit! Last edited by jaguar bone; 12-06-2007 at 06:12 AM. |
