I am yaked out. Most if not all 3D tricks can be done without huge throws and surfaces, but they are good if you lose it. Alternatively a 2:1 thrust can acheive the same.
I saw a pawnee mentioned, funny that, not much they cant do. Sure they got lots of coupling, but in my opinion makes it easier to correct with the sticks. Being a farm boy I have built a couple and appreciate their large wing area and large deflective tail area. I guess its just easier to go b-a-a-a

I enjoy all kinds of aircraft and helis but where I prefer to spend my time flying is 3D and a little IMAC. That being said, I don't see the point of the original poster. Their point was that all that comes out are 3D ARF's when in fact I pick up a H9 catelog and almost all the new planes are warbirds and civilian planes. Cubs, Cessnas, Talyorcrafts, T-34's, etc etc. Like other posters have said, if I wanted one of thos planes, I'd rather build it than get and ARF. There are many kits of non-aerobatic planes available. Although there are several guys playing aerobats at my field, the majority are still sport and scale planes. To each his own but there are plenty of choices whichever your taste.

I think there are two primary reasons that you see more ARf aerobats than say warbirds or other giant scale planes. 1. Right now 3d is the in thing, so you have a large market. 2. Aerobats are very easy to build compared to warbirds and other planes with more scale features. To get a really nice looking warbird you really have to paint it. Film will only take you so far. But with that being said, I think you are seeing more and more nice quality military and other giants becoming available in ARF form. I think/hope this trend will continue. I love it all, so the more choices the better.

Just becasue I love the Yak-54 doesn't mean I still won't blast and goof off with my Cub, Super Cub, or Piper Tri-Pacer.
Crap, Look at Bill H.'s 50% Clipped Wing Cub, ...General Av. , GIANT, FUN.... I wish I could fit one in my life. 3D was supposed to be FAD, but it has stuck, like chewing gum, to the underbelly of the hobby. And it is amazing how it now has become almost the Ambassador of the hobby. General AV is still here, it's everywhere...the very foundation of the hobby. |

Whats a civilian airplane? Have you been to a full scale airshow lately? I just watched Bill Stein fly his Edge 540 and I know there is many more pilots like him and I also know his Edge doesn't have enough thrust to hover but 3D flying with a model is not far off from general aviation anymore. This is not supposed to be taken for an argument just an interesting observation of mine about the way full scale aerobatics are going.
Has anyone seen the Turbine Toucan at an airshow yet or is it not out? http://www.turbinetoucan.com/aircraft/ I didn't vote but my opinion is more selection all over the board. (Especially Suhkois)

It would be cool, but I can't remember last time I went to the field and all planes weren't aerobatic giant scale (except for old-timers). Scale's boring. I try to put myself through watching a whole flight of a P-51 or similar aircraft at the field and I just can't do it.

Ya know that's a perfect valid question..
After giving it some considerable thought - IMHO.... I think it has to do with one's perspective on the RC experience as a whole.. The way I see it (which is not going to be like everybody else) after being into RC for almost 40 years... When I first got into it I was 10 years(1960's) old, My dad and I built a Guillow's Cessna 150 and hung a Cox .010 on it and tried to fly it- it sucked and broke a into a million peices.. Next door neighbor was an avid CL combat and RC glider guy... In my mind at the time all I could think about was a P51 or a P38.. I worked my ars off on my brothers paper route and saved up 120.00 bucks and bought a used old green Orbit Peice of Sh!& - I didnt know any better . Proceeded to dump another couple of hundred into a tail wheel dragger called a Drone.. I put a Super Tiger .46RC on it. It maidened right into the asphalt because I listened to one of the so called know it alls at the local field.. devistated. So I weened on profile RC models .. cheap route till I got proficient.. I built a Great planes Citabria and then got bit in the late 80s by the aerobatic bug several Cap 21's, 232's - Lazers, Edges later and now Yaks.. It seems to me there is a definite progression towards lighter wingloading types better performing aerobatic planes - that just for the pure flight qualities - they handle better in the air and are alot more fun to fly... IMO - nobody wants to wrestle with a high wingloading of a regular civilian airplane. This is my opinion... Ya got to get the fun factor out of your investment - thus profile airplanes that will do anything in the book are just a plane blast to fly.. IMHO... So in retrospect there was what I would call a tendancy towards civilian types in the 70's and 80's that look like it faded out in the 90's with the advent of better performing aerobatic planes. Of course the 3D craze is just hitting full steam - with better 2 strokes in the 50 100 and 150 sizes has really put 3D large scale on the map in a rather solid position- not ot mention they are very nice to fly with no bad habits of the smaller civilian types... one other comment here.. There are also what will call the two RC types - really good builders and really good pilots... Of course there are a few exceptional individuals who I have had the pleasure of meeting who were great pilots and builders unfortunately the were not good famliy men. This hobby can consume lots of cash and wreck a marriage and a bank account...if you let it...IMHO... Geeze that was longwinded sorry!!! Ronster |

General aviation is alive and well. Its called IMAA. My guess the average age at Flying Giants is 30 something. The average age at IMAA is 60+. Different mind set.

I, myself, only fly aerobatics - 3D and precision. I don't particularly like any other type of flying/aircraft, but thats how I feel. I know other people fly scale only and dont like 3D/precision. Everyone's personal likings are different, and it just depends on what you like to fly. Me, I see precision as a challenge to get everything perfect, even though I never will. 3D is a fun outlet from precision for me.
