Are you only talking civilian planes or war birds too?
I love a good quality aerobat and that is what I fly most of the time. They just fly soooo well and can do most of the flight envelope. That being said, some really happy times were had with a P51, Fulkwolf, Zero, Clipped Cub or a Decathlon. I had a clipped wing cub that I used to fly with a 4 stroke. That plane was a blast. I built it light, put flaperons, pull-pull and dual elevator servos in it. It was the first plane I ever flew a knife edge loop with years ago! I used to fly it down the runway with the wind, pull to a 49 up line and then push a 5/8 outside loop. Inverted approach and roll to landing was the finish. Is that still general aviation? ![]() All that being said, I have had my eye on a couple of the newer P51 kits. If someone produced a nice 50cc Citabria I might be tempted. Build it light and put some big surfaces on it and lets see how much fun we can have. Sit in a chair and get those last few evening flights in calm air, right on the deck to a one wheeled landing......hmmmmmm

Hmmm...progress? Wright Bros to present day.. In a few more years it 'll be what ever hapenned to 3D and just hovering your plane! These kids now just want to hover upsidedown where has aviation gone? I hope it continues to advance,it reminds me of the genius of Charlie Parker. Charlie wakin around sayin " Why are you still playing single notes on a sax when you could be playing chords."

I like scale airplanes. I'm about 1/2 way through building my 42% B-36B bomber. Like everyone else, its personal taste. Most people have the drive to put the big stuff up and huck it, but as I grow even older/slower, I'm certain I will not be able to fly the big stuff anymore ( I suck at it now...), especially when on fixed income, so I can relate to having a larger choice of "general aviation" designs.

All I can say is, I love aviation in general and I enjoy watching all the different types of airplanes and flying styles, but if it was not for the 3D part of this hobby I would most likely be out of it now because when the whole 3D movement started I was getting pretty bored with the same old thing I had been doing for 30+ years and this gave me a new challenge of flying style.

3d is a great style of flying but flying in a scale rally can also be a rush. Especially when the plane your flying is the same size as one of your giant extras or yaks. We also cannot complain about not having any good quality arf scale planes. check out these for example. http://www.austars-model.com/
The 120inch has as much detail as anyone could want. Plus its a compy

Where I live general aviation is alive and well. We have very few 3D flyers, a handful of IMACers, a handful of scale and a TON of every-day recreational burn holes in the sky guys flying everything from park flyers to 4-stars to jets to GS Cessnas.
I have no issues with 3D other than I figure it will be years until I get good enough to do it! I am flying IMAC now (Intermediate) and I won't even be trying to learn too 3D my big stuff until I can fly a decent Unlimited... thats just me ![]() The issue we do have at our fields is 3D mixing with other flying. When most folks are doing circuts and generally flying around it is not good to have hovering airplanes, flat spinning airplanes etc in the flight path! So we have a rule that 3D is flown on its own - or with the permission of the the other pilots who happen to be up... just to try and avoid mid-airs. Other than that 3D is very cool and I hope in a few years when I get decent at traditional aerobatics to move on to it. (Actually the same rule applies for aerobatics - if you want to fly a sequence you need to get the permission of the other guys who are flying circuits.) I do some 3D with my small park fliers and stuff on occasion... and all the time in the sim. Just not brave enough to do it in my 40% even up high (okay maybe I hover at the top of a stall from time to time LOL.) |

From what I have seen there are just as many general aviation arfs out there. They probably are not advertised like the 3d planes due to the fact that 3d is where it is at right now. A friend and I are two of the newest in our club and we couldn't be more different. He is into scale and general aviation. I am into 3d. It shows when we pull up with our trailers and you look inside. But we love flying with each other. We both know where the other is going to be in the air.
The only problem I see with his scale obsession is he thinks the planes have to be completely scale and is willing to sacrifice performace to achieve this. He built a V tail Bonanza from KMP and it is one of the most beautiful planes I have seen. The amount of detail in this bird is amazing. With that said he didn't want to cut the cowl at all and take away any of the beauty. So the only engine that would fit and maybe fly it was the (I believe this is the brand) RCV 120. This plane weighs in at 19 and 1/2 pounds. You guys can do the math from there. Any way until my hands slow down and my eyesite isn't what it used to be I will 3d. Don't get me wrong I am building a Ziroli Corsair right now and I will fly it scale most of the time. But it is going to have enough engine for unlimited vert. How cool would it be to see a corsair hovering on the deck at your field? |

The Heatwave in the Heartland had two guys flying TopFlite scale ARFs! Had just as much of the crowds attention and when flying there XFC airplanes. Just a thought.

It helped that the inboard wing tip was, I kid you not, 1" off the runway.
