Well... the unthinkable happened. I can't say what legally (no I am not taking anybody to court). I have damaged my tibia and knee terminally and will likely never walk again with out a cane or walker. It was a very high speed crash on accident. It was a 98 G hit. It was for a team and the car had data aquisition that shows stunning hit loads. Has anybody ever had a total knee loss? Replacement patella joint replaced. It could be a long time before I walk again..... Really bummed that I will walk with a limp from now on, if I can walk soon...
thanks, Keith

Hang in there buddy! Total knee replacements are quite common, heck my 87 year old mother had her knee replaced last year and is walking without a cane! I on't know your details, but don't give up yet!

GremlinX,
I also suffered a bad injury (broken neck) in a race car that ended my career. The Doctors were very pessimistic about gaining full use of my right side. Lots of Titanium in my neck and back. I am pretty much OK now, I walk and do everything fine. There is some discomfort at times, and I am limited on lifting heavy weights, and doing things that might jar the injury again, but you would never notice in day to day activities. A lot of things in your recovery will be up to you. Stay positive, work hard on rehab, and you will do well. NEVER GIVE UP!!! -STEVE- |

Gremlin, are they going to give you a total Knee replacement??
I am a radiographer in a hospital that does plenty of orthopeadic work, if you are in fact getting a TKR (Totoal Knee Replacement) you can expect to be up and walking within 2 to 3 days of the op. And have full movement within a matter of weeks not months. So dont fear. Good luck!!

Gremlin...........hang in there man. Beleive me i know about what it feels like to get injured. I have raced and ridden Motocross for over 30+ years , and have spent a lot of time in the hospital and rehab center's for numerous lawn dart type wrecks. If your only 30 , don't sweat it so much.......your youth can over come many obstacles. You would be suprised what certain surgeries can do now day's. My step mom in the last three years has had both knee's and one shoulder completely replaced. And she never had a bad experince with any of them , and she is 59 years old , and pretty over weight. You will heal twice as fast as she did. Just make sure you find the RIGHT DOCTOR.......i can not stress this enough!!
I have raced motorcross in and out of the professional and Intermediate classes for the past 15 years.........and when you start picking up speed in this sport , it means two things ,1.) your race results will get better and 2.) when you wreck it does more damage. I was almost killed about 2 years ago. I was practicing at an indoor arenacross track , and a guy had snuck out onto the track and went BACKWARDS! We hit head on and both of us we're 2nd gear pinned. We we're both life flighted , and i suffered about 20+ broken bones , two collapsed lungs ( left lung had a 1-1/2" tear in it from one of my ribs) , shattered collar bone , broken sternum , 7 ribs on my left side , and 3 on my right side. I lost an inch off my left hand middle finger , broke three finger's and some other bones all in my left hand. Bruised my heart , my liver and even my eyeballs from the impact! I was on a stupid breathing machine in ICU for almost 5 full days , and was in the hospital for a little over two weeks. Lost 3 months of work........and i still want to race again , and i'm almost 40!! The funny thing is......i would have never got to meet anyone on this board , or anyone in the flying hobby at all , if it wasn't for that wreck. I started looking for something else to do , and needed some time away from the bikes. sooo...my room mate taught me how to fly.....and now it's all history! and what i'm getting at , is if you find the right doctor , take care of yourself , your recovery is almost completely up to you. Your young and you will heal fast. You'll be back up on your feet in no time. good luck and keep us all posted on how your doing. We don't wanna see a fellow FG memeber down in the dumps!! Jeff |

GremlinX,
I had a partial knee replacement at 29. If knee replacement is what is recommended, then do some research and find a good ortho. to do the work. The most important thing is that you do the rehab after the procedure. I am not going to lie and tell you that you will be as good as new because most likely you will not. I can not do any high impact excersizes such as running or jogging but if driving is something that you wanted to continue doing I cant see why not. Like others have said you will recover quickly because of your age. I was up and walking without crutches after 2 weeks. Keep your head up and if you need to talk give me a call. |

Keith,
Sorry to hear that! As the others have said, find the right doc and go through rehab with a positive mind set. Just keep your head up with the attitude that you will walk again. Hang in there! We'll pray for ya! Seth

Keith,
All of the above is good advice, but the best is from Steve and Jeff--a positive attitude will do more than any medication or therapy. Also, if you don't mind sharing your medical information with us, keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. We can help if your attitude starts to waiver .Marian
