Bad-ass Super Contributer!
![]() |
I'm loooking at buying one of these for my 50cc gasser, however I got one doubt....
In the specs it says up to 8 channels, but on the pictures available in the smart-fly website I only see 8 leads to be plugged into the receiver. Being that one of the leads has to be the power supply for the Rx, that'd leave only 7 channels available. Is that correct or am I misunderstanding something? I ask this because with the ignition cut-off requiring an additional channel, I will really need all 8 channels as I plan to run each elevator servo on a separate channel (for making individual adjustments easier as well as open up the possibility to some interesting mixes... ).

Channel 1 and 8 are powered leads. To activate the ignition kill you will plug in a jumper from the IG port to the channel you want to operate it from. It is a very easy setup.

I just set one of these up in a Aeroworks 75cc Exrta-260. Used a Futaba 9 channel PCM Receiver and channel 1 is RH Elev. & Power, Channel 8 is Choke & Power, then the jumper went from IGN to channel 7. Redundancy, Regs, IGN. cut-off all built in, Bad Ass! |

On my gas planes I like to use
-engine cutoff device -lion batts need a reg -5V to the RX (which will be spektrum) This unit accomplishes all of those in one.

Exter Aces,
I have just used a power expander sport in my new 35% Extra 260. It provides clean full power to the servos and RX. It buffers the power, provides redundancy, and helps organize the wires for a nice neat installation. The SmartFly website does a much better job at explaining the benefits than I can. This is the first time I have used one, my other installations even in my 42% Extra don't use any of this fancy stuff, so I know how to do it other ways. I like the Power Expander and will probably use it in other planes in the future. By the way, I speak Kiswahili and your signature actually reads, "Hakuna" ("there is no") Futaba. I'm not sure that is what you meant to say. In the phrase made famous by Lion King the word "matata" is the word for problems or worries. Of course being a JR guy my self I can understand why you might want to say "with out Futaba, no worries", "Hapana Futaba, Hakuna Matata". LOL! Kwaheri..... BWANA STEVE |

really simply curious.... and thanks! but wouldn't I want to say With Futaba... No worries

![]() Now as to why I'm thinking about having one of these in my 50cc gasser, I like the added safety and redundancy it provides. But I'm not fully decided if I'll buy one yet.... |

Think about it, but for a 50cc Plane I would put one in if I had an extra one laying around. I run a single 5200 Fromeco and Reg. for the receiver and 2600 for Ign. |

Seems like a waste of $$$ to put a SmartFly Power Expander on a 50cc plane... Don't get me wrong, I use the SmartFly Expanders & regulators on my larger airplanes, but not on a 50cc bird...
You don't need servo equalization as you only have 1 servo per surface... You don't need a regulator if you use Nimh or A123 batteries... I took the SmartFly Ign cutoffs off all my airplanes, but that's another story... I still use Nimh batteries on 50cc planes for a variety of reasons... Removal of failure points being the most prominent... Not to mention removing weight & $$$ from the build cost... KISS technique dude... Spend the $$$ if you like, but I don't see any ROI on this one...

My first giant scale plane was a 50cc YAK. I decided to keep it simple, single receiver, Nickle batteries, single switches, everything as light as possible. Well the first week of flying I had a failure. That's right, on a 45 degree downline I did a snap roll, and the wings came off. I did have two of those. Oh well!
