Hi
I am just wondering if any of you know of a good way of dealing with pain while in school/ at work. I have back problems and it got really bad this afternoon in math class (to the paint i could no longer focus). Yes i do (at least i did ) have a prescription for drugs but i prefer not i *hate* the feeling of not really being all there and also it would prevent me from flying on the weekends. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm on the waiting list to go back to the orthopedist to maybe get it solved once and for all but in the meantime.... Thanx Steven |

My wife has been getting something called prolotherapy as a part of pain management for a back problems. We had never heard of it before but it has enabled her to be off meds and back to work part time.
http://prolotherapy.com/ Got to admit it seems kinda snake oily but it's getting her some results. Good luck! |

iam feeling your pain brother. my back is the very same. (aleive) i think thats how to spell it,? works for me but it wont go completely away. also when you get home a ice pack works very well. it will take the pain away. you should also do some back streaching. it works very well too. i think almost all men will at sometime go through this. its like a prostrate it starts going bad the day you are born. cruel joke on men

I dealt with a lot of back pain in the late 1990's.
Oddly enough, I found that jogging actually made it (almost) a thing of the past. Sitting too long in one position is a no no. Try walking FWIW Ira |

Hey Steven....... I have an idea which might help you out a little ( maybe alot , it did for me). Alot of the guys on this forum and over at RCU know i race motocross , and have on and off for the past 30+ years. I have fractured a couple different lower vertabrae in my lower back twice. I know how it feels to have to crawl off my bed in the morning , and over to wall , to help pull myself up.....it sucks! The pain meds......To be honest.....do NOTHING but mask the problem , or even make it worse. Youre straining the muscles worse by not feeling all that pain. Believe me , it's a GOOD thing to feel some of the pain , because it lets your body know what muscle's need the attention. If you find yourself a good back doctor , they can show you speacial stretches you can do in the moring , and through out the day as well , to help keep you mobil. One of the best things i ever did , and was worth it's weight in gold was , i went and bought a 4" memory foam pad for my bed. At first , i was bummed , because it didn't seem to be helping. But after about 1 month , my back problems went away. Try one out , they help about 95% of the people who try them. Also......i know this seems like a weird question , but how old is your mattress? Your back can get screwed up really bad by just sleeping on the wrong , or out of date matress. Go test out some new ones until you find one that feels good. It is the best investment you will ever make. With the right matress , , possibly a memory foam pad , and doing the correct stretch's , i bet your back problems will start to diminish. Good luck buddy! And STAY AWAY from pain meds....they do nothing but make the problem worse! Jeff |

Depends with me, sometimes it's my knees others it's my legs with growing pains. And I know the feeling. I can't eat or sleep. I go to a chiropracter every week and it's helped. I may be healthy enough to play baseball again.

I know what you mean about the meds.. I am having a 2 level fusion on Nov 13, (had to wait until after regionals). I have been taking the meds for almost a year. It definatly dulls the senses. I think to help, you must stretch your hamstrings and glutes. Those two muscles contribute to lower back pain more than any others.

I've had on-off back pain for years. Usually such pain is caused by a vertabrae being all of 1/16" out of place, and the muscles spasm to try to re-align the spinal colmun, causing stiffness, pain, and that "pulled muscle" feeling. A simple pressure, over the affected area, while breathing deeply (to encourage the spine to move a bit) will usually result in a big CRACCCCKKKKKKK from the offending joint, a couple of days of freer movement and diminshing stiffness/pain, and a great appreciation for the powers of small women with teensy feet. Hope you get it licked. Back pain sux!!!

Range of Motion Therapy. Might sound a little corney but it works. More of a Holistic Medicine thing.

Flying Freak,
I know you are frustrated and in pain, but this is not a good place for advice. People here want to help you but they have no clue what is wrong with your back. They do not know what type of surgery you had or if your back is unstable. Although everyone means well, their advice may do more harm than good. My advice is you call your doctor and see if he has any advice on pain control until you see him/her. FG Buddies, Cut it out, please. All back problems are not the same, especially in kids and teens. They do not all respond the same to generic therapy.
