Dave, nothing need to be reinforced. The plane is designed and intended for 50CC engines like the DA50, DL50, etc. The customer above was asking about putting a much larger engine on the airplane, so we advised him to limit the performance of his larger engine a bit.

The Katana is a precision/3D aircraft, with large control surfaces (which all precision/3D hybrid aircraft have). As such, it's not a pylon racer, and common sense always needs to used when flying ANY 3D-capable aircraft. We don't recommend vertical full-power dives to "see how fast it will go" and neither does any other manufacturer of giant-scale 3D-capable aircraft. Typical full-throttle level flight speeds on 22x8 or Vess 22A or B props are fine.

This is pretty standard stuff for all GS aerobatic aircraft.

Ben,

thanks again for the above explanations. I will be careful when I assemble my next plane. As I look back at my previous 50cc 30% Extra 260 I can now understand better the issues. I had my B60 on this plane and with the Vess 22B prop it was pretty fast. I didn't realize just how fast it was going until some more experienced folks at the field commented on the speed. One person commented on how this was the fastest large 3D type plane he had seen. With the Vess 23B is was quite slower and pulled into loops better. Probably the better prop with this size engine. Or as you mentioned a Vess 22A would probably be better.

Thanks again.

The Katana is very nice looking plane!

Right, that 366GT is, at least in my experience, a real hoss. I have mine in a big 18.5lb airplane at the moment and I'm impressed at the pullout form hover on a pitts muffler w/ Vess 23A.

Dave, NOTHING needs to be reinforced. That's what so great about 3DH planes. They come great out of the box, and they fly great stock. They have great design, and great hardware to boot. To call it build is a joke . Assembly is more like it.

What Ben is saying is that if you use common sense, you'll be fine with your Kat. Full power speed level is fine, but NO manufacturer will tell you that FULL POWER DIVE followed by a Blender is recommended.

From my own personal experience, The Kat is a much stronger offering that what I've seen on the market.

OK, Well................

I'm still in the process of installing my 60cc twin cylinder, and I fully intend to experiment with smoke systems as well. It will add some extra weight (who cares??), but it will be completely different than all of the other run-of-the-mill setups, I believe. At least I'll be the first one at my flying field to have anything like this ............

I expect it will be a bit of a torture test for the airframe, so we'll have to wait and see what happens...... Unfortunately, you'll have to wait until next spring for the results of my experiments, since I'm currently in the middle of some VERY wicked winter storms (non-stop rain/sleet/snow/ice etc.)

Oh, yeah, that'll be different all right. Personally, I think it will be cool, especially smoke out of the two pipes.

Man that would be very sweet on an electric demo!! )) We actually did one on a foamy at the Nats.. worked okay, however we lite it before take off, need to be able to do an inflight-igintion with min. weight...HHMMMM....

See, get a 3DHS Hucking Machine, and take a walk on the wild side! Man, how does 3DHS turn a Nuclear Cardiology Dude into a Want-to-be Pyro/Smoke pilot? Stay tuned...

I had an incident with my 85" Kat the other day. Inverted harrier was going great until the engine blurbed out and I cartwheeled her.

No problem. Got it fixed in 3 hrs. I didn't even have to take the equipment down to do it. Now THAT's Durability Testing .

VIDEO and pics to follow.

Some pilots seem to be having good results with the pyro AC smoke cartridges on their wingtips. Because (in general) the pyro smoke isn't as thick as oil smoke, I'm not sure it would works so well if the catridge is in the prop blast...but it's worth testing.

I've never seen a color additive for smoke oil for sale, but it sure would be cool. It obviously exists, the full-scale jet teams seem to be able to make red and blue smoke very well. EDIT - It looks like the colored full-scale smoke may be pyro smoke of some kind as well.

I did see this on the other Forum, and it's still UGLY!!!!!! So sad to see this with a brand new model . The slow-mo at the end is really a nice touch, however .

Sort of reminds me of what would happen, if you EVER lost half of the horizontal stabilizer...........................

Glad to hear that it's aready repaired and airworthy again. Plus, I STILL like the sound of a REAL engine powering it !!!!!!!!!
