Try have a look at Krill's 33% Katana wing area! These wings are HUGE, so no mistake there, that's why it is flying so damm good.

But you also have to remember the wings are thin and it wont bleed off spped like other models but it will high alpha well with all the surface area. I had the krill and it was fun, but didn't slow down on approach like other planes do.

WELL I DONT KNOW IF THE DA 85 WILL FIT IN THE COWLE, BUT AS FAR AS WING AREA GOES, I OWN THE 39% KRILL KATANA, AND LET ME TELL YOU , THOSE WINGS ARE SO BIG I COULD FILL THE PLANE WITH LEAD AND IT WOULD STILL LAND HANDS OFF STICKS.
ANYWAY THE NUMBERS THAT ARE ON KRILLS WEB SITE DO SEEM OFF BUT I HAVE NO REASON TO DOUBT THEM, SO ITS NOT THE WEIGT THAT I AM WORRIED ABOUT ITS IF THE PLANE CAN TAKE IT OR NOT, BUT I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO FIND OUT,, ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS ON THE MOTOR ARE WELCOME

the only real reasons to not get a da 85 would be weight, ground clearance, too much thrust at idle, actual space on the plane.
anything else than a da 85 will not get you that extreme amount of power. You can always throttle back but the plane will probably be landing fast even at a low idle. If you would of said you wanted a little more power than a 50cc then the brillelli 60 would of been great and even more power with a tuned pipe but you might as well get the da85 if you are willing to hack the plane a bit to make it fit nicely. |

DA 50 works perfect. We all know there are a handfull of 28 to 30% that are 18lbs and the 50 is more then enough. As for the 85 i would figure you would have some prop clearance issues and just way to much power, you would be hovering just off idle with some serious torq to deal with.I think all that prop and HP will take away from a very clean flying plane......Good Luck

HI,
I just tried to measure 28% katanas wing area as accurately as possible. It is a bit hard because the wings are somewhat complex shaped but here it is. (And I think that maximum error is like +/- 1 dm^2) 107.6dm^2 including two pieces of wings and fuselage area that is left between the wings. 107.6 equals 1668 sq.inches. If someone else has katana on their table please try and measure the wing area and report back so we get confirmation for my numbers. With that wing it will have 79g/dm^2 (or 25.8 oz/sq.feet) wing loading at 8500g which is great imho. I am powering mine with DA50 and KS1060, and I've seen similar setup to be 8,3kg. -Olli- |

If I were you I wouldn't do it. I'm not saying it's not possible but just don't know what are you trying to achieve. This plane flies much better when it's light. In fact any plane with light wing loading will outdo heavily loaded planes with performance. I've got my second 33% Katana with DA 100 and was thinking initialy to fit this one with tune pipes but settled with canisters only 'cos I don't think it needs more power. Flew with Vess 27B It felt very constant (not bad) now I tried Vess 27C and the whole thing just sped up as if I had a bigger engine but gained no extra weight. If you go your way, I'm not too sure if the airframe lasts too long. You also need strong servos 'cos with those large surfaces, super slim wings and higher speed, possibility of the flutter is very real.

People are flying on the engine, but one should actually of flying on the wings as it was meant to be...
Going overpowered to this extent, is not that much fun ... Look at the real world and fly scale, you will be amazed at the skill it takes. ![]() Roger

YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT THE 85 WOULD BE TOO MUCH, I CALLED DA AND THEY SAID TO TRY A DA 50 WITH A TUNED PIPE, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE EVO 58? THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE POWER I AM LOOKNG FOR , I HAVE NO EXPERENCE WITH THIS MOTOR, DOES IT IDLE SMOOTH AND DOES IT HAVE ALL OF THE PROBLEMS PEOPLE ARE POSTING ON THIS FORUM? HALF SAY ITS A GREAT MOTOR AND THE OTHER HALF SAY ITS A PIECE OF CRAP , SO I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM THE OWNES OF THIS MOTOR.

Of course you mean evolution 58, as EVO doesn't make a 58, we have the 80,150,300, and a 450. soon we will have a 50.. Roger

This is my Krill Katana 2.60 with the EVO 80TT and a tuned pipe. I´m very satisfied with the performances and it really let you have a competitive plane with a cheaper engine.

What about 3W? They have the 56B2 twin, 55i, 60, and 70US. They weigh a little more than the da but have more power.
