You can if you need to, but I did not have to on my comp-arf extra. But on another company that makes composites I could only get about 20 degrees on all the tail feathers without doing it.

On the ailerons of the comp-arf I did have to cut a slot the wing side lip so that the horn would not run into it at my max rates.

yes I filed my slots to gain more throw, cut out the skin where the control horns to gain a little more,
depending on how much throw you want you will need to make the slots at the servo arm longer

cut slots just big enough for the leads to go through so the wire would not snake back into the fuse,on the center line of dowels and tube

I'm filing slots longer today, adding lead to the balancer, hooking up linkages and stuff like that.
I'll take some photos after I finish slots.

Ok time for an update, finished the rudder and elevator today, took pics of finished work, forgot to take pics of process........my bad. Heres a little run down, filed slots to gain more throw (aprox 50degrees), also glued some weights in the counter balance of elevator.....(that sucked). glued control horn for pull pull.......Scott (SWB Manufaturing)came through with self adjusting servo tray......its cool stuff.

Ok I have a poser, what the heck do I do with the hinge rod on the rudder, I know I have to cut it, but how do I get it to stay in place, glue ?, bend it ?, or do I have to hire a wizard to make it magically stay in place.

I cut my rods a tad shorter and put those rounded small cap head looking screws in the ends. You could also squirt a little silicon in the ends to hold them in place.

I just bent a short 90 degree tab on the bottom end of the hinge.. that keeps it from working its way out the top of the plane, and the tailwheel keeps the hinge from falling out the bottom of the rudder.

I figured if I ever had to get the hinge out... all I'd have to do would be remove the tailwheel and pull the hinge.

I did the same on the elevators... put the 90 degree bend on the side next to the fuse.

It all depends on how much trouble you're willing to go through to get to your battery. If you want to remove the battery for charging.. you'll have to build a tray in the fuse (over or beside the cans, or with your receiver batteries and using a lot of extensions to get the power to the motor).

I mounted mine on the outside of the motor dome and then mounted the ignition module and cutoff inside the dome.

If you're using 2.4 GHz radio equipment, you don't have to worry about separating the ignition and radion components, though it may still be a good idea... who knows? If you are using 72MHz equipment, you ABSOLUTELY want the ignition battery, cutoff receiver, ignition module and ignition battery regulator at least 18 inches away from the receiver components.
