Default F3A Hall of Fame. World Championships

One of the great things about the RC hobby that never ceases to amaze me is meeting people you often read about but never think you will ever get to meet in the flesh.

Well today I had the absolute priveledge to get a few minutes with Mr Wolfgang Matt of Liechtenstein. If you have not heard about Wolfgang then you have either had your head in the sand or maybe just dont follow F3A too much. Either way let me take a little of your time to tell you about this legend in the sport.

46 years competing in F3A
40 years in the world championships and never ever missed one!!
Won the world championships twice, 1975 and 1979.
In 40 years of competition he has NEVER finished in less than 10th place.

The man is one of the most approachable people you will ever meet and the epitome of the world ambassador to the hobby. When I asked him what he has seen as the biggest single advance in the competitive side of the hobby he was really stuck for an answer. Electric power and battery technology are likely the most noticeable but really he felt the hobby has just seen 40 years of non stop advances.

Wolfgang is sponsored by FUTABA, THUNDERPOWER and HACKER amongst others.

Guys on behalf of the Flying Giants I take my hat off to the a man who has really been at the forefront of the game for a long time. 40 years of competition, never lower than 10th place. The guy is an Icon and I feel privileged that he took the time out to speak with us here on Flying Giants.

I'm with you on that, remember I fought with the coverage at the TAS, it's a serious handful and yours is a larger scale.

Very nice!!!!!

My father judged Wolf Matt in Doylestown Pennsylvania like in '69 or '70... said Wolfgang flew the most perfect pattern he ever saw... that was the year Wolfgang beat Hanno... won the WC's! (I think)

Hi Mithrandir

Good to hear that your dad judged "Wolfgang" in 69 ,70, You must have got lot of help from your dad in aeromodelling. I think some guys are really lucky that their dad were aeromodellers they get lot of help from them.. many years of experience & guidance
Like in my case my dad is not a aeromodeller i learned a hard way but i really had a passion for airplanes... since the begining.

The right way is "Think of only those things that you really want" BUT.. Most of the people always think of those things that they don't want & end up in a mess... What you think is what u r...

I was at Doylestown that year for the 1971 WC That year Brunno Gietzendanner won and Wolfgang was a close second., with Phil Kraft third. Hanno was the guy to watch out for then. The rest is history. I still have one of Wolfgang's beautiful Atlas airplanes from 1975. It flew on rails. It has too much history now to fly, but it sure could. Wolfgang is one of the finest, nicest, helpful, best-all-'round person you could ever meet. I have known him for over 30 years and consider it an honor to call him a true international friend and ambasador for RC. Wolfgang and Roland are simply :First Class".
Best regards to all,
Fred Johnson

Agreed Fred..

I met Wolfgang and Roland at the TOC and became friends with them over the years. Wolfgang initially seems very standoff-ish, but once you speak to him you quickly realize he's very open and genuine. What I find most impressive about Wolfgang is after 46 years flying F3A, he still seems to have the same passion for flying that he's always had.

We don't get much press on the people from the rest of the world here in the USA, and it's a shame. The TOC gave me the opportunity to get to know guys like Quique, CPLR, his brother Benoit (who is an AMAZING pilot in his own right), Roland and Wolfgang Matt, and many others. All of them are true ambassadors to our hobby/sport. Yet another reason why Bill Bennet's contributions to our hobby have been so important, at least to me.

Great write up Kiwi!
What an inspirational piece of model airplane aerobatics history Mr. Matt is.
As a kid....I would always see the Hobby Barn ads...and wished I could have an Arrow!
What a long way the airplanes like the Beryll have come since the days of the Atlas and Arrow.

Wow I`m pleased top see having Wolfgang on the front page was appreciated by you guys. One of my strongest desires with Flying Giants is to bring as much international coverage as we can possibly aquire. The cvhance to be an arm chair critic here at the WC 20076 was and oppoertunity too good to miss. Not just for the flying but also for the chance to meet a lot of similarly minded people in the RC community.

Stick around as I have some more tricks up my sleeve before this is all over.
