I want to use a zen gt80, has anyone tried this? Rumor has it the carb manifold sits too high. Someone did use this engine in the piper cub, seems to me the super cub cowl would be bigger...

I have built 3 Balsa USA 1/3 scale Cubs...1 with a Saito 300 twin, a Super Cub which I fly now with every concievable scale feature (added for weight
)with a 3W 48 twin, and 1 with a 3W 60 sgl. The Saito300 and the 3W48 perform about the same...more than enough power. The 3W 60 produces ridiculous power... waaayyyy too much, IMHO... and that's coming from a guy who likes a little more power as a rule. There is always someone who, due to their lack of knowledge about what makes airplanes fly, who will bolt on a Belchfire 500 for one reason or another but that Cub has a GREAT BIG wing and it's meant to fly on that wing very nicely without all that power. If you want to knife edge, hover, and otherwise 3D the cub go ahead and bolt that Belchfire 500 on er .Otherwise, if you want it to fly like a Cub the 300 or a small 2 cyl gasser, like the 3W48, will surprise you............................................... ........... unless, 'O course yer gonna fill up that cockpit with concrete when building it ....................BTW, mine weighs almost 40lbs with 3.5lbs of lead in the nose for the CG. No flame or disrespect to anyone intended here...I'm OK, You're OK ![]() BTW: If you're using those scale ailerons be careful with a big powerful engine.....potential for flutter, donchaknow

here some pictures of the balsa USA 1/3 CUB that my dad is building right now in the shop.
The engine is going to be one of the smoothest in its class: Mintor 75cc, way too much power but if you decide to tow some gliders... |

I am also a very happy BUSA 1/3 scale SuperCub owner. Although you need a motor that will swing a third scale prop eg, 24 - 25 inches, this means at least 70 or 80cc. Which is actually way too much power for this type of airplane, though you can always throttle back!!
Be careful how you build the elevator/stab/ hinges etc, I am rebuilding from an 80% crash due to elevator loss from flutter and wringing out a too powerful engine [Zenoah GT80] I am using 3/8 meranti dowling on the stab trailing edge and elevator leading edge, to insert the Robart hinges into, rather than the veneered section as per the original plan. Also I have used a light spring to counterbalance the elevator rather than weights which would have cost far too much weight at the back end. Rob W |

If your building the BUSA 1/3 Cub, just keep it as light as you can and the 300 will work just fine. You also get a scale sounding Cub outa the deal. Go for it........
