Have not flown mine yet. Probably will not be able to till spring now. I hope mine does not develop this problem. Is it common? The first I have heard of this to be honest. Then again I never looked for flaws in it, lol... or did I ?

Wow, I have the same exact plane with a ZDZ super 80 and I never had any problems with the motor box beaking but I did modify the way I put it together in the first place. You know how you have the metal l brackets that comes with the kits along with the bolts and locking nuts that go on the back, well I decided to change that. I still put the metal l bracket in but I changed the stock bolts to wood screws and then as I screw the wood screws in, I 30min expoxy both the wood screws and the L bracket to the motorbox.
One problem that I have been having is the cowl getting stress factures. This is my second cowl that has gotten stress factures even after I reinforced the area with fiberglass. Oh and Gapple I seem to recall that you are running the ZDZ super 80 like me, correct? I noticed you mentioned that you get alot of fibration and that shouldn't happen. My 80 is a little rough on the low end but the mid to high range is very smooth. What are you needle settings like? Neil |

Oh and I also noticed a little bit of sagging in the rudder when in a knife edge. It is not the power of the servo I know that because it is an 8711 and it holds the knife edge fine once it is in it, but when you first get in the KE the rudder seems to "bounce". Has anyone else had this problem?

Neil, i have same set-up as you except i only have 1 5955 on the rudder and have had no problems with that set up. My super 80 runs smooth as silk and i have not had any vibration issues from idle to WOT.
how i did my motorbox was i screwed the metal bracket on the outside of the motor box, put tri-stock on the inside then fiberglassed over the metal bracket and screws, not one issue at all. Excellent flying plane, one of my favorites to take to the field and huck the crap out of it! |

I don't have the super 80, I have the 80 RV. Has enough power for my flying. As for the vibration, only in the low end also with mine. Transition and top end are perfect. I had an issue with the stock carb, I believe Walbro WJ-38 is the one, so I replaced it with the Walbo WJ-71 from RCSHOWCASE. Runs perfect. I think the other carb vibrated alot, there for cracking the mounts. Always ran rich no matter what. Anyways, plane is gluing overnight, inside the house, 30 degrees outside. I bought some more aluminum L brackets and will finish it up in the morning.
As for the rudder issue. I have not noticed anything like that. I do however have a hard time keeping the plane in a straight knife edge. Some times I notice a little tail wag also, but everything seems good. Plane is a 3D monster once you get the CG dialed in. Now that I have the carbon fiber gear and wing tube, she floats like a butterfly. Had to sand the crap out of the wings for the CF tube, so beware. |

I have the same engine as you mikedanielle; the ZDZ 80 RV silver head. How do I know that I am mounting the engine correctly? In the correct position so the thrust line and everything is perfect. How do I be sure I am mounting it perfectly? never did it before.

Try this Jason, you need Adobe to open the file, if I can find a way to attach it.

I like to use small clamps and hold the engine there temporary to test fit the cowl. Just measure to the center of the fire wall and them move it over 1/4 inch for offset. Double check it all.
