For you guys who are running the SD carbon fiber landing gear on the Yak. How do you like the gear and is it worth the $$$ that they ask for it? Do they flex a lot or are they pretty rigid?
Thanks, Travis

The SD gear is def worth the money!!! Very little flex, no spreading at all. Gotta tell ya thumbs up. The gear is holding up very well.

YES!! Buy the gear. It is super strong and drops a good amount of weight out of the plane. Get the tube also and you drop around 12 oz, but be prepared to sand the outer tubes of the plane.

mikedannielle,

In Post #57 it looks like a gap at the bottom of the firewal and the tank mounting plate. I also see cutouts in that plate that look like the angle iron should have been put on the inside of the firewall. Why did you not recess the firewall back against the tank plate and put the angle on the back of the firewall?

In the manual they do show the angle iron on the front but it looks like both of us may have had a first run ARF and they changed it later as shown in the manual although if you do it there way you end up with the gap like you have.

Anyone else have the angle mounted on the inside?

What weights are you guys ending up with? I have an ARC verssion and I was busting the 5mm sq. stringrers on the bottom just moving the fuse around so I have replaced all the balsa stringers with spruce. It only added 1.6 oz over the balsa and is way stronger. I am actually just still doing it but will post pics later today or tomorrow when it's all done. Taking about 8 hours to do and $20.00 in spruce. but at only a 1.6 oz weight gain I think it is well worth it.

One reason i did not cut the engine box is because of balance and i don't like to use long stand offs. My batteries right now are mounted behind the rudder servo and that is with throttle servo, choke servo, and smoke system mounted towards the front of the airplane! I believe they are 1/4 standoffs verses a longer set plus additional weight in back to balance plane. The alum stock on the outside was also just my choice i also epoxied triangle stock behind the firewall to make it stronger too. I have not weighed the plane. The cut out in the tank plate is, one for the choke linkage, and two for the air filter i am using.

Same here, i think in an earlier post I told you guys how I epoxied the aluminum angle on the same time as I was screwing in the wood screws to the firewall( I changed the stock bolts with locking nuts to wood screws and expoxied them in with the angle). I also did what Mike Danielle did which is I also put triangular stock on the inside of the box for extra strength.

We just purchased 4 of these with DA-85's in Toledo. Looking forward to the build.

What are you guys using for wing bags? Any one using the Hobby Pak line?

Brian

Delrin I see you are in SU. I live in Clinton and just finished one of these with a zdz 80. Hopefully going to fly it tomorrow. If not tomorrow this weekend.
I have a all black Wing Tote bag that works and fits beautifully.

Jason,

Sweet. I can't wait to start building it. We all can't wait. 4 of us got them in 4 different schemes. We are looking forward to the flying season. It's going to be somewhat windy tomorrow. Friday looks best.

What size did you go with? 42", 50" or 57"?

Brian

The 50" and it has a very nice fit with these wings. I originally got it for 31% edge 540 wings but they were swimming in it.
Windy tomorrow yes. That is a bummer we called it off, again. Going to fly the smaller edge tomorrow. It is a blast in the wind when you know what it is going to do I'll take pics toomorrow for you if you'd like.
Great site too! Thanks...

Yeah, we all have been monitoring/referencing this post. We'd love pics.

The surface wind page is nice. We use it all the time and it's very accurate. Looks like Thursday is going to be the best day so far.

Brian,

Who was selling these at Toledo? I didn't see any there.

Thunder Tiger now distributes them. We met Rocky McCarter in their booth who heads the lineup and he helped us out. They had the 50cc hanging from the rafters. They were trying to get rid of it already built so they didn't have to haul it back to Cali. I would have bought it if I already hadn't sprung for the 33%.
