I guess the best thing to use is k2r spot lifter?
Which engine are you using? Did you fuelproof inside the box? If not it might be a good idea to do so.

It's probably not a backfire. Sometimes they just spit. You can get plastic venturi stacks to help with it. Google for "velocity stack". I've not used them but apparently they work well.

rod got my extra... yes its normal to have some SPIT or blowback the V-stack like follie says will do the trick..

the inside was coated very lightly with thinned epoxy, so it shouldnt hurt anything..

glad you like your plane rod

Yes it is spit from the carb I think, that is a better way to describe it than "backfire". The engine runs so well I can't imagine that it was actually backfiring. Jessie- thanks again, I figured I would stop bugging you with all of my questions . I do love the plane. I will look for a v-stack.

Who sells fiberglass landing gear for this plane? Mine got bent today on a horrible landing, my worst in years. I'll try straightening it to get by, but wouldn't mind replacing it to shed a few oz.

Chuck

I don't know who sells fiberglass, but here are some carbon fiber ones.

I am going to see if this place has carbon landing gear for it:

http://stores.ebay.com/happychoice2009

I have asked around and everyone who has tried their spinners (4" for $40 shipped) has been pleased. I wonder if their gear is as good. They show 50cc Extra 300 gear for $40, plus $10 shipping but the dimensions are a bit different than what ericb listed.

Rod...congrats on the maiden..
Chuck.. we do stock replacement gear....
one thing to think about...
I know lots of folks use CF gear.... but.. with the stock gear, there is flex and give for those not so perfect landings. They can be straightened or replaced for under $30.....

with CF gear.. if there is a hard landing and there is little flex in the gear....all the forces are sent into the fuse, potentially damaging that.......

Just something to think about

I've got some of the GT CF gear on my yak. It's nice but there's not a big weight difference. Weight savings between wheels is a lot more substantial than the gear. I did it on my 88" Yak because I wanted it to match my 110" Yak. I would recommend staying with the stock gear. I'm running the stock gear on my 88" Edge and I ran it the whole time I had my 88" Extra. If you have a bad landing with the stock gear you just take it off and straighten it. If you have a bad landing with the CF you'll have a lot more to fix than straightening the gear.

Yeah thanks for the info guys. I fly on a really bumpy strip (which has tended to bend alu gear really easily) but am going to give the stock UC a go first. It looks pretty sturdy.

Thanks for the replies, I just ordered replacement gear from Extreme Flight. I will try to straighten the landing gear tomorrow at a friendly auto shop so I can get flying again. Sorry about saying "fiberglass" instead of carbon fiber...brain f..t.

Rod.d, the velocity stack will totally dry up that slime. I have them on my 88" Extra and 88" Yak. DL-50 and DLE-55 but they fit the DA-50 perfectly as well.

Get them here:

Charles,
What wheels are you using that are lighter than the stock wheels?

I totally pancaked my Extra and was able to bend the gear back. It was pretty bent up. You can't tell it was ever bent.
