Quique: From the first time I saw you flying a plane in the year 2000, at Costa Rica los Reyes RC Air Show, I canŽt believed a plane can do such extreme maneuvers, like torque rolls and your very slow perfects rolling circle (now I know the names). That was my very first time I have contact with the RC planes, and that touch me very deep, your show was AWESOME (as are today every time I see one of your video). Two years later (2002), I start flying model planes, and every time I talk about RC Model Planes with my buddies, your name allways sound. THANKS very much to be such a great model for the RC community. The next year (2008) I hope to be at the Joe Nall to see you flying again in live (Maybe IŽll travel with Guardia and Pastora, to be there for the first time).
Regards from Costa Rica Pedro Apuy

Thank you very much for your comments. I never feel I had resistance or questioning the 3D. I always felt it was well received and from day one who watched wants to do it, got hook it!. As you very well say now 3D is a very popular aerobatic and practice by many people around the world and I think will keep growing. I do not know what could be the next "big thing" but what I know not matter what we are doing or what we will be doing in the future it will still same basic principle of the aerobatic, show control, be precise and smooth. Take care and thank you again. Quique

Dear Glenn, Thank you for your post and comments. I judged you as well many times at the Nationals and I watch you winning it!
1)good question and difficult answer. Both options are very good and capable to win. I think this is a personal decision. I choose glow for this W/C. As well I flew electric before with good results too. I feel combination glow/biplane balance very well. I also like the sound of the glow and I feel helps to enhance my flying. I enjoy listening to my YS engine, I do not this is very personal. I grew up with engines around, my dad raced bikes, go karts, cars, actually he did make his own car and tuned his engines. I think EC engines are in my blood! but the sound and smell give me more motivations. I feel also glow engine do a better job under strong winds however improvement of the battery shown lately are great and the difference it is smaller. Bottom line I trully believe it is very personal choice and both are valid. I am more to the glow but it is my own and personal choice. 2)Yes I flew 4 blade at W/C as well. Prop is an APC modified by Wayne Ulery. Wayne build his props based on 15.5x12 APC prop. With his own technique of additing carbon and fiberglass he re-shaped and re-pitched the prop. Prop size is 16.2x13. 3)You are ready :-) Take care and see you next Nats. Quique

Okay folks, we're going to ask the last questions be posted prior to 5 pm CST tomorrow. In the meantime, I have a trivia question for you Quique buffs out there. Question is: What is the significance of the acronym "MES", and what does it stand for? ***PM MADMAX THE ANSWER, DO NOT POST*** If you are super uber connected industry type who would know this, you're DQ'd. First 3 to answer correctly win be sent a FlyingGiants Care Package. Keep the questions coming folks, and THANKS QUIQUE!!

Gents.
We are in the process of uploading a seriously large amount of excellent photos in to the Large events gallery over the next day or so. At the moment there is a small hiccup that Max is fixing (aren't you Max) so we can get you some of the greatest RC photos we have had access to for a very long time. Hang and check often. You wont be disappointed I promise. |

I met Quique at the Great Planes E-fest in Champaign, the first one held. What a gracious fellow. We had about an hour conversation and you know we talked about airplanes for about 5 minutes. The rest of the conversation was about how he liked living in the US and the direction model aviation was taking and then we talked about 40 minutes about his young son. He is a most proud Papa and I just can't imagine what he son will be like when he starts flying. We were both impresed by the youth talent we saw there and their dedication and practice and how they flew so artistically. You want to talk to Quique ask him how his son is doing.

About your first question. I think is something that we all feel and best way to "cure" it is to fly in front of the people as much you can. Competition, shows, demos give you very a similar feeling. More you fly in front of others more help you to control your self. More you practice and get tuned before the contest also help you to feel stronger about your flying. A good caller will help to. Caller is very important and is the person will be out there with you, talking to you guiding you and perhaps helping you with any nerves you could have. Perform 100% at competition is not easy, it takes time and experience so do not feel bad. Build up a free style routine takes time and it is very challenge to come up with 4 minutes of no boring flying!. I try to work all the time in different maneuvers or combination of maneuvers. Basically I am all the time trying to expand my list of maneuvers or combination of maneuvers. I try to get the best feel for each. Later I search for music and I will be choosing based on what I like and what could work with my list of maneuvers. It is important to have the feeling for most of your maneuvers or combination at the time you are doing and choosing the songs. When you have the feeling not only you know how to fly them you also know more or less how much time it takes to do each maneuver. Later listening to the music and this list you start to build the program and put it in writing. Later go to the field play the music and try to do what you wrote. If the feeling for your maneuvers are good your timing to the music will be very close that with practice will be possible to fine tune. More or less this is what I do. I am sure there are many other method and are all valid as each pilot feel and like different style of music and flying which is directly related to the way to construct the routine. Take care. 10 members have responded, all with incorrect answers. Except for Breadbowl who was on the US Team, and thus DQ'd.
It's a tough one folks.

TOC was the contest that helped so much to develop the giant scale airplanes and the aerobatic. Thanks to the TOC we are flying the planes we are flying now and the equipment we are using. TOC did have a free style segment and it was an important segment of the contest even the weight of the program was 20%. Because the necesity to come out with something different and new for the free style I end up doing this type of aerobatics. With the big support of my Dad Mario I started to visualized a different type of flying when I did slow down my giant scale airplane. I was starting to be able to keep controlling my airplane beyond the stall. I learned that was possible and from then we could not stop!. With my dad we modified surfaces and start to get them bigger and bigger. I was feeling that was what we need to do. I was flying an airspeed that I was getting a mix a lift. Some comming from the wing and othe coming from the prop. Actually I was doing what it is known today a Harrier and by then I called "The cobra" the basic maneuver of the 3D aerobatic. When I was be able to control the airplane on upright harrier then I wanted to do same but inverted, then I started plying with the wind and understand that I could come down like a leaf upright, inverted. Later I found I could roll the airplane at harrier speed so I was doing the harrier roll and so on. It was a 30 days of practicing for TOC when one maneuver did come one right after the other. My dad and me were so exited that we could not wait to come to Las Vegas. Was back in 94 and I still having in my mind all the feeling when I flew my free style program for first time in public that day at TOC. Thank you and take care. Thank you for your comments and for share with us what happened at TAS. Believe it or not I sort of remember that, I think I do because you were very close!!. I hope I did speak to you with the right tone :-). Regarding to your questions. I think all of us goes and at least one time or more !! through to a situation as you described. No body likes crashes and they are depressing!. Of course I went through and it is hard to come back and put an other airplane together but you know is part of the game. I warrantee you if you start right away a new project right after the crash your pain will be less and your focus will remain healthier. Sooner your start a new project after the crash better it will be for you. Please write me at qqaircraft@gmail.com regarding your flying. Loking forward to see you again. take care. We have to thanks also Mad for making this possible, I am enjoying and it is my pleassure.
Thank you for getting our airplanes. The reason of lowering the wing it is related to reduce coupling and as resulting of that the airplane will do better specific maneuver such rolls and more equally pitch wise positive and negative snap rolls. Lowering the wing allows to use a bit of more dihedral which helps with the airplane stability. Helps the vertical uplines and downlines to be more straight. Remember wing location is relative to stab location, to engine thrust location and overall shape of the fuselage. Wish also Merry Christmas for you and your family. Take care and thank you again.
